The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rain will hit Assam for the next 72 hours due to a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal. A depression is rapidly forming and could intensify further, bringing intense rainfall across the region.
Officials expect widespread showers, potential flash floods, and localized landslides, especially in vulnerable districts like Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, and Lakhimpur.

IMD Issues Red Alert Across Assam
The IMD reported that a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is moving toward the northeastern region. This weather system is strengthening and could turn into a deep depression within 24 hours. As a result, heavy rain will hit Assam, especially on June 1 and 2.
Dr. Soma Banerjee, a senior meteorologist, explained, “Assam will experience strong winds and heavy rainfall. People should stay informed through local weather updates and take necessary precautions.”
The IMD has issued a red warning for the next two days, followed by an orange alert on the third day. Rainfall totals could exceed 150 mm in some places.
Districts Prepare for Emergency Response
In response, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has activated emergency teams. Local officials are stocking essential supplies like food, fuel, and medical kits in high-risk zones.
Rescue teams have positioned boats and flood equipment across vulnerable districts. Moreover, schools may close temporarily if conditions worsen.
An ASDMA official said, “We’re taking all necessary steps to reduce risk. Our teams are ready to respond to any situation quickly.”
Depression Over Bay of Bengal Continues to Strengthen
Meteorologists noted that sea temperatures in the Bay of Bengal remain high, allowing the depression to intensify. This development makes it even more likely for heavy rain to hit Assam and nearby states.
The IMD has advised fishermen to stay ashore and suspended sea travel in coastal regions. Strong winds are expected to accompany the rain, especially in southern and eastern Assam.
Officials continue to monitor the system closely using satellite imagery and Doppler radar.
Rainfall to Affect Other Northeastern States
Alongside Assam, states like Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland are also expected to receive heavy rainfall. The hills may see landslides due to saturated soil, and the Brahmaputra River could rise quickly in response to runoff.
Authorities have begun inspecting embankments and drainage channels to prevent overflow. Engineers are reinforcing weak points to ensure safety.
Timely action from state and district authorities could prevent major disruption during the downpour.
Public Safety Guidelines in Place
To keep people safe, the Assam government has issued a list of guidelines. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded areas.
The administration has also asked people to keep emergency kits ready, unplug electrical devices in flood-prone homes, and monitor local news bulletins. Municipal workers are clearing blocked drains to minimize urban flooding.
In rural areas, residents near riverbanks are being asked to shift temporarily to higher ground. Emergency shelters are now operational in several locations.
