In a landmark development for Assam’s agriculture sector, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora on Monday flagged off the state’s first export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger to London. The ceremony took place at Krishi Bhawan in Khanapara, marking a historic step for farmers in the hill district.
Speaking at the event, Bora expressed happiness over the achievement. He highlighted the superior quality of ginger grown in the hilly terrain of Karbi Anglong. He said the export represents a proud moment for Assam and a major opportunity for local farmers to access international markets.
“This is the first time ginger from Karbi Anglong is being exported to London. Its quality is excellent, and this milestone brings great joy to us,” Bora said.

APEDA Facilitates First Shipment
Vineeta Sudhanshu, General Manager of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), confirmed that this is the first consignment of Assam ginger to reach London.
She explained that the export resulted from sustained efforts to connect local producers with global buyers. In January, APEDA organised an international buyer-seller meet. During the event, international buyers interacted with exporters from Assam and showed strong interest in the state’s agricultural products.
Sudhanshu stated that such buyer-seller meets help create direct trade links. She added that the positive response from overseas buyers paved the way for this shipment.
The trial consignment includes 1.2 metric tonnes of ginger. Officials will monitor quality feedback from the London market. If buyers approve the produce, exporters will send larger shipments in the coming months.
Boost for Farmers and Local Economy
The export of GI-tagged ginger is expected to provide a significant boost to farmers in Karbi Anglong. The Geographical Indication (GI) tag certifies the product’s origin and unique qualities. It enhances brand value and builds trust in international markets.
Farmers in the district have long cultivated ginger using traditional practices suited to the region’s climate. The GI recognition now allows them to market their produce at premium prices. Officials believe the move will raise farmer incomes and encourage sustainable farming.
Experts say the export also strengthens Assam’s position in the global spice market. By focusing on quality certification and branding, the state aims to expand its agricultural exports.
Expanding Assam’s Global Footprint
The government has taken several steps to promote Assam’s farm produce abroad. Through partnerships with APEDA and other agencies, authorities aim to create export-ready supply chains. Quality control, packaging, and logistics support remain key priorities.
Officials noted that consistent quality will determine long-term success in overseas markets. Therefore, they urged farmers and exporters to maintain high production standards.
The export of Karbi Anglong ginger signals growing international demand for niche and region-specific products. It also reflects the success of coordinated efforts between farmers, exporters, and government agencies.
PM Modi to Visit Kokrajhar
In related developments, Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kokrajhar on March 13. During the visit, he will lay foundation stones for several major development projects ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.
As Assam expands its development agenda, the successful export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger stands out as a major milestone. It not only highlights the state’s agricultural strength but also opens new doors for farmers seeking global opportunities.
