Assam marked a significant milestone in its sports journey with the launch of a new high-performance sports centre in Kokrajhar. The centre aims to train local athletes and transform regional talent into national champions. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility, describing it as a long-awaited gift for the youth of Bodoland.

The centre features modern infrastructure, advanced fitness labs, and a team of professional coaches. With this step, Assam joins the league of states investing heavily in grassroots sports development.

Regional Athletes to Gain Equal Opportunities

The Assam high-performance sports centre brings world-class training facilities to an area often overlooked in the past. CM Sarma stated that the centre will remove the need for young athletes to migrate elsewhere for quality coaching. “Talent is abundant in Kokrajhar. All they need is support, and this centre delivers that,” he said.

Young athletes from tribal and rural backgrounds will now train under certified professionals. This opportunity opens doors that were once out of reach for many.

State and BTR Partner for a Shared Goal

This project is a joint effort between the Assam government and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) administration. Both authorities shared a common vision: to nurture rural sports talent and create Olympic-level athletes within the state.

Sports Minister Nandita Gorlosa emphasized this collaboration. “Together, we’ve created a platform where dreams can begin and grow,” she said. The Assam high-performance sports centre also received guidance and partial funding under the central Khelo India scheme.

Best-in-Class Facilities for Future Champions

The sports centre is spread across several acres and includes synthetic tracks, multi-sport indoor arenas, and modern gyms. It offers a full recovery wing, physiotherapy stations, and nutritional care.

Trained staff monitor each athlete’s performance using advanced tools like motion capture and biometric analysis. These tools help coaches create personalized training plans.

With such features, the Assam high-performance sports centre rivals national-level institutions and promises to elevate local talent.

Empowering Youth from Tribal Regions

Kokrajhar and surrounding districts have long produced promising sportspersons. However, lack of infrastructure pushed many to leave or give up their dreams. Now, this centre offers a chance to stay, train, and compete at top levels.

CM Sarma added, “No child should have to leave their home to pursue a dream. This centre ensures that they won’t need to.” Free coaching, sports gear, and scholarships will also be offered to underprivileged students.

Driving Local Growth and Opportunity

Beyond sports, the centre brings economic opportunities to the region. It creates jobs for coaches, support staff, and local vendors supplying food, equipment, and services.

Sports Minister Gorlosa noted the ripple effects: “Every champion we train here will inspire others. And every job we create strengthens the community.” The centre aims to benefit both individuals and the broader economy.

More Centres Planned Across Assam

Encouraged by the Kokrajhar success, the Assam government plans to build similar centres in four more locations. Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur, and Diphu are next in line.

Officials confirmed that each centre will focus on sports relevant to its local context. These facilities will feed into a growing state-wide sports network, preparing Assam to shine on the national and global stage.

The Assam high-performance sports centre in Kokrajhar will also link with national sports authorities for exposure visits and athlete exchange programs.

Building a Sports Culture for the Future

The state government isn’t just building infrastructure—it’s fostering a culture. CM Sarma said the aim is to create role models in sports who can inspire thousands of young people.

The Kokrajhar centre will also host district-level competitions and training camps, encouraging more participation. Workshops, community events, and awareness drives will run throughout the year to keep the momentum going.

The Assam high-performance sports centre stands as a symbol of hope, discipline, and ambition. By placing world-class resources within reach of local athletes, the state has taken a bold step toward transforming its sporting future. As young talent trains on home soil, Assam moves closer to producing its next generation of champions.
