Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika has made a strong statement regarding the state government’s unwavering stance on flood safety and transparency. In a visit to Sareng in the Darrang district on Monday, May 12, 2025, Hazarika emphasized that no compromise will be made when it comes to ensuring the safety of the people during the monsoon season. His comments underline the government’s dedication to maintaining high standards in flood protection projects while firmly addressing any instances of corruption or negligence.
The Minister was on an on-site inspection of a significant ongoing project—a 19.65-kilometre-long embankment under construction along both banks of the Dimila River. This project aims to connect Sareng and Duikhutimukh, two crucial locations in the district that are often affected by floodwaters. With the embankment being a crucial element in protecting thousands of residents from the devastating impacts of annual flooding, the project’s timely and efficient completion is critical.
During his visit, Hazarika took the opportunity to inspect the progress of the construction and assess the quality of work done by the contractors. He made it clear that any form of corruption or negligence in the handling of flood protection infrastructure would not be tolerated under any circumstances. His strong stance on accountability sends a clear message to both contractors and officials that the state government is serious about maintaining the highest standards of governance, especially when it comes to protecting people’s lives and properties.
Hazarika also took the time to address concerns raised by local residents, many of whom have been severely impacted by floods in previous years. He assured them that the government is prioritizing flood control measures and that the ongoing embankment construction project is just one of many such initiatives being rolled out across Assam. In his statements, the Minister highlighted that ensuring flood protection is not just a matter of infrastructure, but also a moral responsibility to safeguard the welfare of the people of Assam.
The Minister’s visit comes at a time when Assam has been grappling with the recurring threat of floods during the monsoon season. Every year, thousands of lives are disrupted, and vast agricultural lands are submerged, causing economic loss and social distress. The state government has thus made it a priority to improve its flood management systems, with a focus on strengthening embankments, improving drainage, and adopting new technologies for more effective flood control.
Hazarika’s remarks on corruption reflect the government’s resolve to ensure that flood protection projects are executed with integrity. Over the years, several instances of delayed or poorly executed flood control work have led to public outrage and calls for accountability. The Minister’s assurance that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of corruption in these projects provides a sense of relief to the residents of Assam, who have long felt that their concerns regarding flood safety have not been given the attention they deserve.
In addition to the Dimila River embankment, the government is also planning further projects to enhance flood protection in other vulnerable areas of Assam. Hazarika stressed that the state is working to modernize its flood management strategies, incorporating advanced techniques and methods to prevent breaches and ensure long-term sustainability.
The state’s flood safety initiatives align with the Assam government’s broader vision for infrastructure development and disaster resilience. As part of this vision, Hazarika reiterated that the government is focused on fostering an environment of transparency and efficiency, where all public works—especially those that directly impact people’s safety—are executed with utmost diligence.
