Assam Rifles and the Customs Department busted a major cigarette smuggling attempt during a joint operation in Teliamura on Monday.
The security forces launched the operation at 9:15 a.m. in the Chakmaghat area after receiving specific intelligence inputs from internal sources and 11 WEU. Acting promptly, the team increased surveillance and set up vehicle checks along the suspected route.
During the operation, personnel intercepted a Tata truck (TR-01-AP-1717) and conducted a detailed search. The inspection led to the recovery of 6.5 lakh contraband cigarettes packed in 65 cartons.
Officials estimated the international market value of the seized cigarettes at around ₹65 lakh.

Driver Arrested on the Spot
The team arrested the truck driver, Giashuddin (36), during the operation. He is the son of Maynul Haque and a resident of Baitakhal Basti, Patharkandi, in Assam’s Karimganj district.
Preliminary questioning indicated that the accused was transporting the consignment illegally for further distribution.
The operation concluded successfully at around 1:30 p.m. without any incident.
Customs Take Over Investigation
After the seizure, Assam Rifles handed over both the accused and the recovered cigarettes to the Customs Department. Customs officials initiated legal proceedings under relevant laws.
Investigators are now working to trace the source of the consignment. They are also examining possible cross-border links and the involvement of organized smuggling networks.

Assam Rifles reaffirmed its commitment to combating smuggling and other illegal activities. The force stressed the importance of coordination with enforcement agencies to protect sensitive border areas.
Officials stated that Assam Rifles will continue to act on credible intelligence inputs. The force aims to disrupt illegal trade networks and strengthen regional security.
