Guwahati, October 16, 2025, The Assam government has announced that the investigation and trial in the Zubeen Garg case will now move to a fast-track court. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the decision was taken to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and transparently.
The Chief Minister revealed that a Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) will be appointed to handle the case exclusively. The government, he said, will extend every form of support to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the singer-actor, who passed away earlier this month.
Fast-Track Court for Swift Justice
CM Sarma said the government understands the emotional weight of the case for the people of Assam. Zubeen Garg was not just a popular singer but a symbol of Assamese identity and youth culture. His sudden demise sent shockwaves across the state, leading to calls for a transparent and time-bound investigation.
“The Zubeen Garg case will be tried in a fast-track court so that no delay occurs in bringing out the truth,” the Chief Minister stated. “We have decided to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor who will coordinate closely with the SIT and ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied.”
He added that the move reflects the government’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and fairness in all high-profile cases that affect public sentiment.
SIT Continues Probing Key Leads
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already interrogated several individuals linked to the late artist, including friends, associates, and local authorities in Baksa district. Recently, the SIT submitted its preliminary report to the court, which included findings from forensic and post-mortem examinations.
According to officials, the team is now focusing on verifying digital evidence and cross-checking testimonies. The SIT also plans to meet prominent personalities from Assam’s cultural and political circles for further insights into Zubeen’s last days.
The investigation is being monitored closely by senior police officers, and the Chief Minister has directed that weekly updates be submitted to the Home Department.
Public Outrage and Emotional Appeal
The death of Zubeen Garg sparked widespread grief and protests across the state. Vigils were held in Guwahati, Tezpur, and Jorhat, with fans demanding an impartial and speedy investigation.
Family members of the late artist welcomed the government’s decision to move the case to a fast-track court, calling it “a step in the right direction.”
Civil society organizations, including student unions and cultural forums, have also expressed their satisfaction. They urged authorities to ensure that the findings are made public. However, that justice is visible, not just procedural.
Political Reactions and Broader Context
The opposition parties, including the Congress and AIUDF, have expressed cautious optimism about the government’s announcement. Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said, “The move to fast-track the case is commendable, but the process must remain transparent. The SIT must be allowed to operate without political influence.”
In contrast, the BJP leadership in Assam has maintained that the investigation is progressing professionally. They dismissed allegations of mishandling or delay. Further, stating that the government’s priority is to protect both. Meaning, integrity of the case and the emotions of the public.
Commitment to Cultural Legacy
Alongside the legal process, the state government has initiated efforts to preserve the legacy of Zubeen Garg. Plans are underway to develop his Samadhi Khetra in Sonapur into a cultural memorial, complete with a museum and performance space celebrating his contributions to Assamese music and cinema.
The project will be overseen by a special committee comprising artists, cultural scholars, and government officials. CM Sarma said the memorial would symbolize Zubeen’s enduring bond with Assam’s people. Moreover, his role in shaping the state’s artistic identity.
Call for Calm and Unity
As the investigation continues, the Chief Minister appealed to the people of Assam to maintain peace and patience. He said, “We understand the emotions surrounding Zubeen’s passing. The government stands with his family, his fans, and the entire Assamese community. Let the truth come out through due process.”
The fast-track court proceedings are expected to begin within the next few weeks. Once the Special Public Prosecutor formally assumes charge.
This development marks a crucial turn in the Zubeen Garg case, signaling a stronger, time-bound pursuit of justice that aligns with public expectations and the government’s promise of transparency.
