In a surprising turn of events just one day before the Karbi Anglong Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections, BJP candidate Monjoy Langthasa has been detained by the Hojai police. The arrest came after authorities discovered a significant amount of cash, totaling Rs 11 lakh 50 thousand, in two vehicles associated with Langthasa.

The money, reportedly intended for election-related activities, was deposited with the administration in adherence to the existing code of conduct. The timely intervention by the police followed a tip-off, leading to the search and subsequent discovery of the cash in the vehicles, which were en route from Haflong to Guwahati.

Alongside Langthasa, four other individuals were apprehended, and the two vehicles were seized by the police. This development is particularly notable as Langthasa was among the six BJP candidates who had recently been declared victorious uncontested. The saffron party had already secured a significant advantage over its rivals with these uncontested victories.

The NCHAC polls are scheduled to take place tomorrow, with voting set to occur from 8 am to 4 pm. In the event of any discrepancies, repolling has been slated for January 10. The final chapter of this electoral saga will unfold with the counting of votes on January 12.

The detention of a prominent BJP candidate on the eve of the elections adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape, raising questions about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. As voters prepare to cast their ballots, this incident will undoubtedly be a focal point of discussion and scrutiny, influencing the dynamics of the NCHAC elections.
