The Bharatiya Janata Party on April 7 launched a strong attack against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of hypocrisy and political opportunism over his opposition to the Waqf Act reforms. BJP spokesperson Dr. Mehjabin directly challenged Gogoi’s stance, claiming that he has never genuinely cared for the welfare of minority communities in Assam. She said his sudden concern was nothing more than shedding crocodile tears aimed at scoring political points.
Dr. Mehjabin, while addressing the media, said Gogoi failed to allocate even a single rupee from his MP Local Area Development Fund toward the upliftment of the minority community when he represented the Kaliabor constituency. She pointed out that despite holding power and resources for years, Gogoi never took concrete steps to address the concerns of marginalized groups. She said his recent statements on the Waqf Act reform appear insincere and disconnected from his actual record on minority welfare.
She emphasized that the Waqf reform is not about dismantling institutions but about making them more transparent and accountable. According to her, the BJP government has initiated reforms to bring better administration and end decades of misuse and corruption associated with Waqf properties. She said that leaders like Gogoi, who had the chance to improve things, chose instead to remain silent or complicit, and now they oppose reforms only to mislead people for political benefit.
Dr. Mehjabin also questioned why Gogoi never raised the issue of Waqf mismanagement during the Congress-led UPA regime. She said those who kept quiet during widespread irregularities now act as champions of justice when they are in opposition. She maintained that such selective outrage exposes a political double standard. She said BJP’s approach has been consistent—focused on development, empowerment, and good governance regardless of community lines.
The BJP spokesperson added that the current reforms are rooted in empowering the Waqf boards by removing bureaucratic hurdles and promoting digitization and public accountability. She said the government aims to protect Waqf properties from land mafias and ensure their income benefits poor and underprivileged Muslims, as originally intended. She said Gaurav Gogoi, instead of supporting positive changes, chooses to stir up fear and misinformation for electoral gains.
She further criticized Gogoi’s absence from ground-level engagement in minority-dominated regions of his constituency. She said his interactions with the communities have remained symbolic at best. Dr. Mehjabin accused him of turning up during elections but vanishing once votes are counted. She said that people now see through these tactics and no longer trust leaders who only remember them during times of political crisis.
The BJP also highlighted its own development work in minority areas under both central and state schemes. Dr. Mehjabin said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” includes inclusive development for all sections of society, including Muslims. She pointed out that schemes related to housing, education, skill development, and healthcare have reached even remote parts of Assam where previous governments failed to make a visible difference.
Dr. Mehjabin challenged Gogoi to publish a detailed account of his fund usage as MP and compare it with current BJP representatives. She said transparency must begin with the opposition if it wishes to question the government. She accused the Congress of relying on emotional rhetoric instead of concrete data to appeal to voters, especially when it comes to minority issues.
She concluded by saying that the people of Assam, especially from minority backgrounds, are now more politically aware and will not be swayed by empty words. She said the BJP’s focus remains on delivering results and not indulging in divisive politics. She expressed confidence that such attempts by Gaurav Gogoi and his party will backfire as the public demands action, not performance.
