The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticised opposition parties for stalling proceedings during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament, accusing them of prioritising political theatrics over legislative responsibilities.
Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, addressing a press conference in Agartala, said the disruptions resulted in a “largely unproductive” session that wasted valuable parliamentary time.
Parliament Functioning Hampered
According to Bhattacharjee, of the 120 scheduled hours, the Lok Sabha was able to function for only 37 hours, while the Rajya Sabha sat for just 41 hours. He noted that even when Union Home Minister Amit Shah was addressing the House, the opposition members chose to stage walkouts instead of engaging in discussion.
“Parliament is meant to debate, legislate, and resolve issues of national importance. But the opposition deliberately paralysed it for political mileage,” Bhattacharjee remarked.
Opposition Demand on Electoral Rolls Rejected
The BJP leader dismissed opposition demands for a debate on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, clarifying that the matter falls strictly under the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“It is a routine exercise conducted to clean up and update voter lists. No genuine voter will be excluded in the process. The opposition is only trying to mislead the people and create unnecessary confusion,” he alleged.
Key Bills Left Pending
Bhattacharjee expressed concern that several important issues and pending Bills could not be discussed due to repeated protests. These included proposals on regulating online gaming, as well as other legislative measures listed for passage during the session.
“The logjam prevented healthy debate on matters that directly affect citizens. People expect Parliament to deliver, but the opposition chose disruption over responsibility,” he added.
Targeting Congress and CPI(M)
Launching a scathing attack on the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Bhattacharjee accused them of hypocrisy and said they had no moral authority to question the BJP.
“These parties have a history of corruption, nepotism, and failed policies. People of Tripura and the rest of India have rejected them. Their only agenda now is to block development and obstruct governance,” he said.
Bhattacharjee reiterated that the BJP would remain focused on addressing issues of both Tripura and the nation, regardless of opposition tactics.
BJP’s Stand on Legislative Productivity
The Monsoon Session, marred by walkouts, sloganeering, and frequent adjournments, has been widely regarded as one of the least productive in recent years. While the government insists that critical discussions were derailed, the opposition has argued it was raising people’s concerns.
However, the BJP leadership maintains that the legislative agenda was sacrificed due to “political drama” staged by rival parties.
“Instead of engaging constructively, they chose disruption. This not only wastes taxpayer money but also denies the people meaningful governance,” Bhattacharjee concluded.
