Police in Tamarhat, Assam seized 7.86 grams of suspected brown sugar and arrested one individual during a targeted operation on Tuesday evening, April 15. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a swift raid in the area and intercepted the accused, who was allegedly carrying the contraband with the intent to distribute it. The operation aimed to crack down on drug trafficking in the region, which has recently witnessed a surge in narcotics-related incidents.

Officials confirmed that they recovered the suspected brown sugar neatly packed and concealed in a small pouch. They took the accused into custody on the spot and transported him to the Tamarhat Police Station for interrogation. The police have not disclosed the identity of the accused yet but stated that they are verifying his connections and background to determine if he is part of a larger drug network operating in the area.

The police sent the seized substance to the forensic laboratory for further examination. They believe the brown sugar was meant for distribution in the local market, targeting vulnerable youths. A senior police official leading the operation said they have intensified surveillance and will continue to crack down on illegal drug activities. He added that the current seizure is part of a broader campaign to dismantle drug networks that are slowly trying to establish themselves in Assam’s border areas.

Tamarhat, situated near the inter-state border, has often been flagged as a vulnerable zone for cross-border smuggling. The police have identified it as a critical hotspot where drugs and contraband goods frequently change hands. In recent months, law enforcement agencies have increased monitoring in border towns and stepped up patrolling to prevent trafficking through these routes.

The officer in charge of the Tamarhat Police Station stated that the area has become increasingly prone to such criminal activities due to its proximity to neighboring districts and porous borders. He emphasized that cooperation between different law enforcement agencies, including the Border Security Force and Narcotics Control Bureau, remains essential in tackling this growing issue.

Local residents expressed their concern over the rising drug-related cases and praised the police for their prompt action. They called for more awareness programs to educate the youth about the dangers of narcotic addiction and urged the administration to increase police presence, especially during late hours. Community leaders also stressed the importance of parental guidance and school-level interventions to prevent youngsters from falling into the trap of drug abuse.

In the past year, Assam police have made significant progress in combating drug trafficking, with hundreds of kilograms of illegal substances seized and many peddlers arrested. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly stated his government’s zero-tolerance policy toward drugs and has directed the police to deal with offenders firmly.

In light of this latest seizure, senior officials from the Dhubri district police headquarters have issued a fresh set of directives to all local police stations. These include enhancing ground intelligence, collaborating with neighboring districts, and holding routine checks on highways and known transit points.

Authorities are also planning to introduce community policing models to involve local youth and leaders in crime prevention. Officers believe that better coordination between communities and police can result in early detection of drug-related movements and lead to quicker arrests.

The arrested individual is likely to face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police officials confirmed that they will present the suspect before the court after the forensic report confirms the nature of the substance. Investigators are also exploring whether the accused had accomplices or was operating under the command of a larger syndicate.

As the investigation continues, police have assured the public of sustained efforts to rid Tamarhat and surrounding areas of the drug menace. They called for vigilance and cooperation from the citizens, urging them to report any suspicious activity immediately.
