The Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura successfully foiled multiple attempts to smuggle high-value goods across the India-Bangladesh border. The BSF arrested five cattle smugglers and seized contraband worth over ₹20 lakh, dealing another blow to illegal cross-border activities.
The coordinated action was carried out in the Sepahijala and West Tripura districts, which remain sensitive zones due to their proximity to the international border. The operation was part of a continued crackdown on border crimes that have plagued the state in recent years.
Seizure Includes Cattle, Garments, and Cosmetics
According to officials, the seizure included a mix of cattle, foreign garments, and banned cosmetics. These items were being transported through unfenced portions of the border under the cover of darkness. BSF sources confirmed that the smugglers used local paths and temporary hideouts before attempting to cross into Bangladeshi territory.
“Acting on intelligence inputs, our jawans launched late-night surveillance near the border posts. Additionally, separate operations, we arrested five individuals and recovered contraband hidden in sacks and carts,” said a senior BSF officer.
The arrested individuals are residents of border-adjacent villages and were allegedly working under instructions from trans-border syndicates. The contraband has been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation.
Persistent Smuggling Threat Along Border
Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, much of which is difficult to monitor continuously due to terrain and vegetation. Also, smugglers often exploit gaps in fencing and low-visibility conditions to move illegal goods.
In recent months, there has been a spike in smuggling attempts, including cattle, narcotics, gold, and foreign consumer products. These operations are believed to be driven by well-coordinated cross-border networks that rely on local collaborators.
Earlier in May 2025, BSF Tripura recovered narcotics worth ₹3 crore near the Sonamura sector, showcasing the vast scale of illegal operations targeting the region.

BSF Personnel to Receive New Uniforms
In another development, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that BSF troops in Tripura and other northeastern states will soon be outfitted with newly designed camouflage uniforms. Further, these uniforms are designed to improve mobility, comfort, and stealth in jungle terrain.
A BSF spokesperson stated, “The new gear aligns with the terrain-specific demands of the northeast. It will enhance both morale and performance during field operations.”
The upgrade in uniforms is part of a broader modernization initiative undertaken by the central government to strengthen India’s border guarding forces.
State and Central Officials Laud BSF Efforts
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha praised the BSF’s timely action in a social media post. “Our brave BSF personnel continue to safeguard our borders and protect our state from illegal activity. Their vigilance is commendable.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, has frequently highlighted the role of paramilitary forces like the BSF in securing India’s eastern frontier. He recently emphasized boosting technological surveillance and strengthening cooperation with neighbouring countries to curb smuggling.
Appeal to Locals for Support
BSF officials have urged border villagers to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Awareness campaigns are underway in multiple districts to educate locals about the dangers of smuggling and the legal consequences of aiding such activities.
Smuggling operations often exploit the economic vulnerabilities of border villagers. To counter this, the government is focusing on community development and employment generation in sensitive zones.
