In a decisive move against cybercrime in Assam, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has frozen ₹16 lakh siphoned off from a Dibrugarh-based tax consultant in an elaborate cyber fraud.

The action marks a breakthrough in tackling digital financial crimes targeting professionals and small businesses in the state.

Victim Targeted by Fraudsters Posing as Bank Officials

The victim, a tax consultant from Dibrugarh, fell prey to cyber criminals who posed as bank officials.
Using a combination of phishing tactics and fake links, the fraudsters tricked the consultant into revealing sensitive financial details.

Within minutes, a large sum—totalling ₹16 lakh—was withdrawn from the consultant’s account and routed through multiple digital wallets and fake bank accounts to avoid detection.

According to CID Assam, the complaint was filed promptly, which helped the department trace the movement of funds quickly and act before the money could be fully laundered.

Swift CID Response Helps Freeze Stolen Money

Once the case was reported, the CID’s cyber cell launched a coordinated investigation.
Using real-time digital forensics and banking data, officers traced the fund flow.

The ₹16 lakh was tracked across various accounts and swiftly frozen under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
CID officials confirmed that the entire amount has been successfully safeguarded and is likely to be returned to the victim after court proceedings.

Cybercrime on the Rise in Assam

This case highlights the rising threat of cybercrime in Assam, especially involving impersonation and online banking fraud.
According to state officials, there has been a surge in complaints related to cyber fraud across major towns including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar.

In 2024 alone, Assam recorded over 3,500 cyber fraud complaints—a 40% rise compared to the previous year.
Most victims include professionals, senior citizens, and small business owners, making it a growing concern for law enforcement agencies.

CID Issues Advisory for Public Awareness

In light of the incident, CID Assam issued a fresh advisory urging people to avoid sharing bank details, OTPs, or clicking on suspicious links.
The department encouraged the use of official banking apps. And, two-factor authentication to secure financial accounts.

The department also recommended using the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) to lodge complaints swiftly.

Cybersecurity experts say banks need to enhance fraud detection systems and collaborate more closely with law enforcement to prevent losses.

The CID has called for stronger coordination between private banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). However, to tighten oversight of large or unusual online transfers.
