Chief Minister and Health Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday reiterated the state government’s commitment to creating a “new Tripura” where the next generation will not face the challenges of healthcare and infrastructure. He said that almost every treatment facility is now available within the state, reducing the need for patients to seek medical care outside.

The Chief Minister was addressing the 20th Foundation Day celebration of Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital, where he also inaugurated several new projects.

Focus on Healthcare Infrastructure and Development

Dr. Saha expressed happiness over the newly developed playground and accommodation facilities at TMC. He also laid the foundation stone for a Trauma Centre, which will help reduce patient load at GB Pant Hospital.

Highlighting the college’s achievements, he noted that over 13 batches of MBBS students have already graduated from TMC. He suggested that alumni and former doctors should be invited to future events to strengthen institutional ties.

“We are expanding infrastructure continuously, but at the same time, we must repair and maintain existing facilities to ensure quality healthcare services,” the Chief Minister said.

Call for More MBBS Seats and Responsibility in the Medical Field

Dr. Saha informed that an application has been submitted for 50 additional MBBS seats at TMC, which will benefit hundreds of aspiring students in Tripura. He emphasized that while development takes time, progress is steady and certain.

“This is a noble and divine profession. Doctors must not neglect their duties. By identifying shortcomings, we can improve ourselves. If we stop working, development will halt. Many of our students are serving not only outside the state but also abroad, which makes us proud,” he added.

Stress on Skill Development and Awareness

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of skill development for doctors and said referral cases should be minimized since most treatments are now available in Tripura.

“People are spending huge amounts of money outside the state due to lack of awareness. We must spread the message that Tripura is equipped with advanced healthcare facilities. With technology, AI, and innovation, we can improve healthcare delivery further,” he said.

He also mentioned that Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty, who is under treatment, received his primary medical care at TMC and is currently stable without oxygen support.

Event Attended by Eminent Doctors and Officials

The event witnessed the presence of senior officials including Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Dr. Pramotesh Roy (Chairman, Society for Tripura Medical College), Swapan Saha (CEO, TMC & BRAM Teaching Hospital), Professor Dr. Arindam Dutta (Principal, TMC), Professor Dr. Jayanta Poddar (Medical Superintendent), Professor Dr. A.K. Chakma, along with other prominent doctors and dignitaries.

Dr. Saha concluded by reaffirming the government’s vision: “We are working to build a new Tripura where the next generation will not face problems.”
