The Congress on Friday alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Tripura attacked it and a delegation of Left leaders in Sipahijala district. The opposition party also claimed that the policemen accompanying the delegation did ‘nothing’ to defend them.
In a tweet, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “A delegation of Congress leaders was attacked by the BJP today in Tripura’s Bishalgarh and Mohanpur. The police who went with the delegation did nothing. “He said,” Tomorrow the BJP is holding a victory rally there. This is the victory of party-sponsored violence.” Tripura Congress chief Birajit Sinha alleged that the Tripura police were only acting as spectators and did not act on the spot.
Congress in-charge of the state Ajay Kumar alleged that the Congress leader was only inquiring about the violence in the state after the assembly elections and was attacked while the police were merely watching. He also alleged that the law and order situation in Tripura has completely collapsed. Kumar tweeted, “The BJP has been attacking the opposition parties since the elections in Tripura. So far more than 500 attacks have taken place, but not a single FIR has been registered.
A delegation of Congress-Left leaders had reached Agartala, where BJP goons pelted stones and damaged vehicles. The results of the Tripura assembly elections were declared on March 2. The BJP-IPFT government has returned to power in the state for the second consecutive term. The BJP secured 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, while its alliance partner IPFT got one seat.
Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhary said none of the eight-member team was injured in the attack in Nehalchandranagar. He said that two-three vehicles carrying leaders of Left parties and Congress were vandalized by unknown miscreants. “A delegation of MPs, MLAs and local leaders of Left parties and Congress made an unscheduled visit to Nehalchandranagar in Bishalgarh today. During his visit, slogans were raised and some miscreants attacked his vehicles.
The police escort team acted immediately and ensured the safety of the members of the delegation. He said that one person has been detained in this case and raids are on to identify the rest of the attackers.
