Dhalai DM Grants ₹6.6 Lakh Relief to 55 Shopkeepers Affected by Violence

The District Magistrate and Collector of Dhalai district has granted ₹6.6 lakh as interim relief and ex-gratia compensation to 55 shopkeepers whose businesses suffered losses during the October 23 violence linked to Tipra Motha supporters in Salema, Shantirbazar under Kamalpur Subdivision.

According to the Pay Order (No. F.6(4)/DM(D)/ACCTTS/2025-26/763-66), the District Magistrate’s Office released the funds on October 24, 2025, after evaluating the damage reports. Moreover, the relief package was distributed based on the severity of losses.

Out of 55 beneficiaries:

  • Five shopkeepers received ₹25,000 each for major losses,
  • Seven shopkeepers got ₹15,000 each for moderate losses, and
  • Forty-three shopkeepers received ₹10,000 each for minor damages.

In total, the administration released ₹6.6 lakh under Bill No. 457, as per Memorandum No. F.6(55)/DM(D)/Acctts/2024/755-58. Consequently, this compensation aims to provide quick financial support to affected traders.

Further Inquiry Ordered

To ensure fairness, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kamalpur will conduct a detailed inquiry to identify any left-out victims. If new victims present valid proof of damage, they will also receive compensation.

Furthermore, district officials clarified that this relief serves as initial financial support, while a comprehensive loss assessment continues. Once the final evaluation is complete, the administration plans to offer additional assistance to those in need.

Violence Disrupts Local Businesses

The October 23 incident caused chaos in Salema and Shantirbazar, leaving several shops and small businesses in ruins. Eyewitnesses said the violence erupted suddenly, forcing traders to flee for safety. As a result, several establishments were set ablaze or vandalized, creating panic in the area.

However, the district administration and police acted swiftly. They controlled the mob, secured the area, and restored order within a short time. Since then, additional security forces have been deployed to prevent further unrest.

Swift Government Action

Following the incident, the District Administration of Dhalai moved quickly to assess the damage and release relief funds. The District Magistrate personally reviewed the reports and approved financial aid to support traders in rebuilding their livelihoods.

In addition, officials emphasized that the government aims to help shopkeepers restart their businesses and revive local trade. They also assured that long-term rehabilitation would follow once all losses are verified.

Many locals appreciated the prompt response, saying the relief provided much-needed hope to families who lost their only source of income.

Restoring Peace and Confidence

Meanwhile, the district administration continues to monitor the situation and support recovery efforts. Police teams are investigating the violence and tracking those involved.

Moreover, community leaders have urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities. They believe that unity and patience will help restore normalcy and rebuild trust among communities.

The District Magistrate’s Office reiterated its commitment to assist every affected shopkeeper and ensure justice. Officials affirmed that their top priority is to protect livelihoods, strengthen peace, and rebuild public confidence across Dhalai.
