Agartala, Aug 21, 2025: Tripura Police arrested a suspected drug peddler and seized a large quantity of cannabis valued at nearly Rs 8 lakh during a raid in West Tripura district on Wednesday.
Police officials confirmed that around 67.400 kilograms of dried cannabis were recovered from the accused’s residence. The operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs regarding narcotics movement in the area.
Superintendent of Police (SP) West Tripura stated that the accused had been under surveillance for several days. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided his house and found the contraband neatly packed for distribution. The officer further said that the accused has been taken into custody and will be produced before the court.
Authorities revealed that the seized cannabis was intended for smuggling to other states. The SP said that the estimated market value of the consignment is around Rs 8 lakh. Investigations are underway to identify others involved in the network.
Police sources informed that the operation is part of the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in Tripura. In recent months, the state has reported multiple cases of cannabis smuggling, raising concerns about its growing illegal trade. Although, officials have intensified raids across border areas and vulnerable routes.
Probe to map the supply chain
Tripura, due to its geographical location, has long been on the radar of law enforcement agencies for drug smuggling activities. Cannabis cultivation and storage in remote villages often fuel trafficking networks. The state police, in coordination with central agencies, have launched a series of operations to dismantle these networks.
Officials highlighted that several awareness drives are also being carried out to discourage local involvement in cannabis cultivation and trafficking. They stressed that strict legal measures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act will be enforced against offenders.
The SP appealed to the public to extend cooperation by sharing information about suspicious activities. He said community vigilance is essential in the fight against the drug menace.
Strong signal against peddling
Meanwhile, experts have pointed out that frequent narcotics seizures in Tripura underline the urgency for stronger inter-state coordination. Moreover, they believe that strengthening surveillance on highways and border routes will be crucial to curbing trafficking.
This latest arrest adds to a series of successful operations in the state aimed at breaking drug supply chains. Police officials reiterated that the campaign against narcotics will continue with even stricter monitoring in the coming months.
The accused remains in custody, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
