A shocking crime has shaken Tripura’s Sepahijala district after a drunken man allegedly killed his 12-year-old son during a violent outburst at home. The accused, Shimul Das (40), a fish seller from Kemptali Baidyamura, fled the area soon after the incident.

According to Melaghar police, Shimul returned home late Monday night in a drunken state and began abusing his wife. His son, Anupam Das, tried to protect his mother and calm his father down. Enraged, Shimul reportedly turned on his son and strangled him to death.

After the attack, Shimul dumped the boy’s body in a nearby rubber plantation and escaped. When police arrived at the scene, he had already vanished.

Community Mourns the Tragic Death

The gruesome murder has left residents in deep shock and anger. Neighbours described Anupam as a kind, well-behaved boy who often intervened to protect his mother during his father’s drunken rages.

“He was very mature for his age. It’s heartbreaking to think his father killed him,” said a local resident.

Police have started a manhunt to trace Shimul Das, suspecting he might be hiding in nearby villages or attempting to cross into Bangladesh. Officers believe the killing was a result of uncontrolled rage fueled by alcohol.

A senior officer from Melaghar police said, “We’re following several leads. The accused will be caught soon.”

The boy’s body was recovered on Tuesday morning and sent to the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem. Residents have demanded justice and stricter action against repeat alcohol offenders in the area.

Infant’s Sudden Death Stuns Laxmitilla Residents

In another heartbreaking case, a four-month-old baby died in his sleep in the Laxmitilla area under Srinagar police station.

Police said Saurav Shil (28) and Priyanka Shil (26), who married in April 2024, attended a local function on Monday evening with their infant son, Srijan. After returning home, the couple played briefly with their baby and went to bed.

Early Tuesday morning, they woke up to find Srijan lying motionless. They rushed him to GBP Hospital in Agartala, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police Await Post-Mortem Report

The sudden death left the parents and neighbours in tears. Police found no external injuries, suggesting the baby may have died due to suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

“We’re awaiting the post-mortem report. So far, there’s no sign of foul play,” said an officer from Srinagar police station.

The incident has deeply affected the community. Locals have gathered around the grieving couple, offering condolences and support.

Two Tragedies Raise Alarm Over Domestic Issues

These two unrelated but tragic incidents have stirred emotions across Tripura. While one shows the devastating impact of alcohol abuse, the other highlights the fragility of infant health and the need for awareness about safe sleeping conditions.

Community leaders have urged the government to strengthen counselling and de-addiction programs in rural areas. They also called for greater public education on infant care and mental health.

Both cases remain under investigation, with police vowing to deliver justice and uncover the full truth behind each tragedy.
