South Tripura is grappling with flood-like conditions as relentless rainfall causes rivers to swell, prompting the administration to issue a red alert and initiate emergency relief efforts.
Muhuri River Breaches Extreme Danger Level in Belonia
Continuous heavy rainfall in South Tripura has triggered a flood alert, with water levels in the Muhuri River at Belonia surpassing both the danger and extreme danger thresholds. At 7:00 PM, the river recorded a water level of 15.70 metres, exceeding the danger level of 15.00 metres and the extreme danger level of 15.50 metres. This rise is nearing the all-time high of 15.74 metres observed in 1973.
The administration has responded swiftly by issuing a red alert and advising residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and ready for immediate evacuation if required.
Six Relief Camps Opened in Sabroom
In response to the worsening flood situation, six relief camps have been opened in Sabroom to accommodate and assist displaced families. The 9th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (Disaster Management) has been deployed at the Sabroom SDM office to coordinate rescue and relief operations.
Feni River Water Levels Under Watch
Authorities are also closely monitoring the Feni River at the Sabroom Bazar Ghat gauge station, where water levels reached 15.40 metres at 6:30 PM. Though below the danger level of 18.30 metres, officials remain on high alert due to the steady increase. In 2024, the river surged to a record 19.80 metres, prompting a cautious approach this year.
Agricultural Areas Submerged in Jolaibari
Several low-lying agricultural fields in Jolaibari have already been submerged, damaging crops and affecting livelihoods. Farmers are facing significant losses as water continues to rise.
Emergency Response and Contact Information
Control rooms have been activated in Belonia, Sabroom, and Santirbazar, offering 24/7 coordination of relief and evacuation efforts. Residents are urged to keep emergency contacts handy and report any distress situations immediately.
Food Festival Postponed
Due to the ongoing crisis, the South Tripura District Level Food Festival, originally scheduled for July 11, 2025, has been postponed until further notice. Officials will announce a new date once the situation improves.
Rising Waters in Gomati River at Amarpur
Elsewhere in the district, the Gomati River near Rangamati Bridge in Amarpur stood at 28.88 metres at 6:30 PM, below the danger mark of 31.50 metres, but showing a rising trend.
