Abnormally heavy monsoon rain in Tripura on Thursday night triggered a major landslide, completely blocking the arterial road connecting Kailasahar, the headquarters of Unakoti district, with Kumarghat. The affected 10-kilometer stretch forms a crucial part of National Highway-208, disrupting transportation and daily life in the region.

According to local sources in Kailasahar, the downpour began around 10 p.m. on Thursday and continued for hours, causing a massive landslide near the Shantipur HS School area. Along with the landslide, several trees were uprooted under the impact of heavy rain and stormy winds, further worsening the situation. Multiple electric poles also collapsed onto the road, plunging the area into darkness and paralyzing all movement of traffic.

Railway Passengers Left Stranded

The roadblock severely affected railway passengers traveling from Kailasahar to Kumarghat to board trains. With the route completely cut off, many were forced to abandon their journey midway and return home. Locals expressed frustration over the lack of immediate response from authorities to clear the debris and restore traffic.

Local Residents Voice Concerns

Debabrata Deb, a resident of Kailasahar, expressed concern over the government’s inaction. He pointed out that a significant portion of the highway had collapsed near the Balehar area, making the road unsafe even after debris removal. “Unless the government takes urgent steps to repair the damaged portions of the road and remove the landslide debris, people living in Kailasahar and nearby areas will continue to suffer,” Deb said.

Urgent Need for Restoration

Residents highlighted that the Kailasahar-Kumarghat road is the primary lifeline for commuters, traders, and students, and its closure has created widespread inconvenience. The disruption has not only affected daily travel but also blocked access to essential services, including healthcare and emergency transport.

Local sources added that with the monsoon season still active, the risk of further landslides and road damage remains high. Citizens have urged the Public Works Department (PWD) and state authorities to deploy emergency teams and begin restoration work immediately to prevent prolonged hardship.

Growing Concerns Over Infrastructure Safety

The incident has reignited concerns about the fragility of road infrastructure in hilly areas of Tripura, where heavy rainfall often causes landslides and road collapses. Experts stress the need for long-term solutions such as slope stabilization, proper drainage systems, and regular maintenance to reduce the impact of natural calamities on transport networks.

As of now, the Kailasahar-Kumarghat road remains completely blocked, isolating large parts of Unakoti district and leaving thousands of residents dependent on quick government intervention for relief.
