Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government was working to fulfil the promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the 2026 Assembly elections. He made the remarks while campaigning for the BJP-led NDA candidate in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.

Addressing rallies in Nagaon and Dhing, Sarma said the government had started implementing its commitments within the first six months of returning to power. He also urged voters to support NDA candidate Devasish Sharma in the October 6 by-election.

Himanta Highlights BJP’s Development Promises

Sarma said the BJP had promised to make Assam one of India’s leading states. He claimed that the government had already begun working towards that goal.

The chief minister highlighted youth empowerment, women’s welfare and investment as key areas of focus. He said the government was implementing schemes that provide financial assistance to young people for entrepreneurial ventures.

He also referred to the Orunodoi scheme, which provides financial support to eligible women.

According to Sarma, Assam was attracting large investments, and Nagaon was also benefiting from this activity. He said the government would continue working to fulfil the assurances made to the people.

These commitments formed a central part of the BJP’s campaign message ahead of the bypoll.

Seeks Support for NDA Candidate Devasish Sharma

Sarma appealed to voters to support Devasish Sharma, the BJP-led NDA candidate for the Nagaon parliamentary constituency.

He said Nagaon should become part of the state’s development activities. The chief minister also alleged that the constituency had lagged in development because Congress had represented the seat.

At a rally in Dhing, which is represented by the Congress in the Assam Assembly, Sarma asked voters to give the BJP an opportunity.

He linked his appeal to infrastructure development and the delivery of government welfare schemes.

The chief minister said voters should support the BJP if they wanted better roads and government schemes to reach beneficiaries.

Youth Employment and Women’s Welfare in Focus

The chief minister placed particular emphasis on employment and financial assistance for young people.

He said the government was implementing programmes to support entrepreneurial activities. He also referred to women’s welfare measures, including Orunodoi.

The BJP has made employment, infrastructure and welfare delivery central themes of its campaign in the constituency.

Sarma also expressed confidence that the BJP would return to power for a fourth consecutive term in the next Assam Assembly election. He attributed this confidence to what he described as the government’s performance and public support.

His remarks reflected the ruling party’s assessment of its record and its campaign message ahead of the bypoll.

Nagaon Lok Sabha Bypoll on October 6

The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is scheduled for October 6, 2026, while counting will take place on October 9.

The election became necessary after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the party and joined the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly election. Bordoloi subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat and became an MLA.

The bypoll has brought the BJP-led NDA and Congress into a contest over representation and development in the constituency.

Sarma’s rallies in Nagaon and Dhing were part of the NDA’s campaign to seek voter support for Devasish Sharma.

Campaign Centres on Development and Welfare

The chief minister’s campaign message focused on the implementation of BJP promises, youth opportunities, women’s welfare and infrastructure.

He urged voters to support the NDA candidate, linking that choice to the government’s proposed development work in the region.

With polling scheduled for October 6, the campaign has entered its final phase. The result will determine who represents Nagaon in the Lok Sabha.
