Himanta Highlights Key Welfare Schemes in Assam
During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Himanta presented a detailed update on schemes like Orunodoi, Mukhya Mantri Ayushman Asom, and Mission Basundhara. These flagship programs have improved lives across Assam, especially in rural and low-income communities.
The Orunodoi scheme now provides monthly financial support to over 27 lakh women. It aims to ensure that economically disadvantaged households can meet essential expenses like food, healthcare, and education.
The CM also mentioned that Assam has expanded Ayushman Bharat coverage under a state initiative called Ayushman Asom. This has helped more families access quality healthcare services without financial stress.
PM Modi Appreciates Assam’s Progress
Prime Minister Modi appreciated Assam’s efforts in improving social security and governance. He praised the use of technology in delivering welfare benefits directly to people’s accounts. This ensures transparency and reduces corruption.
CM Sarma also shared updates on infrastructure projects like road construction, school upgrades, and housing for poor families. The PM encouraged Assam to maintain this pace of progress and focus more on youth employment and skill development.
According to officials, Modi assured continued support from the Centre for ongoing and future development programs in Assam.
Himanta Invites FM Sitharaman to Assam
After the meeting with the Prime Minister, Himanta met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He thanked her for continued support to Assam’s economic roadmap and extended an invitation to her to visit the state.
Sarma said the Finance Minister’s visit would boost confidence among local investors and help promote schemes focused on women-led entrepreneurship. He also suggested a special interaction between Sitharaman and Assam’s self-help groups, many of which have benefited from central financial aid.
FM Sitharaman welcomed the idea and expressed her willingness to visit Assam soon, according to sources.
Economic and Social Goals Aligned
The Chief Minister stressed that Assam’s welfare policies go beyond subsidies. They aim to build long-term economic security for citizens. He said the government is focusing on education, digital inclusion, and rural livelihoods to drive sustainable development.
Sarma also highlighted Assam’s work on land rights under Mission Basundhara. This initiative has helped citizens access legal land records and ownership documents without visiting government offices.
In both meetings, Sarma underlined that Assam welfare schemes reflect the state’s commitment to inclusive growth. He said that by blending social benefits with economic programs, the state is laying a strong foundation for future generations.
Women and Youth at the Center of Growth
CM Sarma told the Prime Minister and Finance Minister that most schemes in Assam are centered around empowering women and youth. For example, the Orunodoi scheme sends money directly to women’s bank accounts. The hope is that financial inclusion will bring about greater household security and independence.
For youth, the state has launched several programs for skill development and entrepreneurship. Government data shows a sharp rise in enrollment in job-oriented training in 2024–25.
CM Sarma said that helping young people find meaningful work is the next big challenge. He asked for Centre’s support in expanding job-linked training and funding for startups in Assam.
Assam’s Road Ahead: Technology and Inclusion
Another key part of Sarma’s briefing involved the use of digital tools in governance. The Assam government has introduced online portals for services like land registration, school admission, and welfare applications. This has improved speed and reduced corruption.
PM Modi welcomed these digital innovations and asked other northeastern states to follow Assam’s example. The Prime Minister also praised Assam’s success in integrating tribal and remote areas into mainstream governance using tech-based outreach.
Centre-State Cooperation Remains Strong
The meetings highlighted the strong cooperation between Assam and the central government. Both PM Modi and FM Sitharaman reassured CM Sarma of full support for Assam’s development plans.
In return, Sarma thanked them for backing key schemes and for keeping Assam high on the national agenda.
As Assam moves forward with ambitious projects and people-first policies, the Centre’s continued backing could help the state become a model for welfare-driven, growth-focused governance.
