The Hmar delegation from Pherzawl district met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday and raised concerns over road connectivity, electricity and banking services. The delegation sought government intervention to improve basic infrastructure and access to essential services in the remote district.
The meeting also covered concerns linked to the proposed Pherzawl Autonomous District Council. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said the issues raised by the delegation would be examined and necessary action would be taken.
Hmar delegation raises road connectivity concerns
The Hmar delegation included Tipaimukh Assembly Constituency MLA Ngursanglur Sanate and representatives of civil society organisations from Pherzawl and Jiribam. The group highlighted the difficulties faced by residents because of limited connectivity in the area.
One of the main demands was the upgrade of the Jiribam-Tipaimukh road from a district road to National Highway status. According to the delegation, the route could provide an important link between National Highway-37 and NH-2.
The proposed upgrade could improve movement between Jiribam, Tipaimukh and surrounding areas. Therefore, the delegation asked the state government to take up the issue with the relevant authorities.
Hmar delegation seeks better power supply
The Hmar delegation also raised concerns about electricity connectivity in Pherzawl. It specifically discussed the proposed power-line connection from Sipuikaun Power Station to Parbung.
The representatives also sought extensions of power supply to other areas through proposed power-line connections. Reliable electricity remains an important requirement for homes, public institutions and economic activity in remote parts of the district.
However, the delegation did not limit its demands to major infrastructure. It also highlighted the need to improve access to basic financial services for residents.
Banking access remains a key concern
The Hmar delegation asked the Chief Minister to establish a bank in the area, citing difficulties caused by inadequate banking access. The demand comes even as banking infrastructure in Pherzawl has expanded this year.
Punjab National Bank opened a branch at Senvon in April 2026. The branch became the second banking facility in the district after State Bank of India opened a branch at Parbung.
PNB’s official branch locator currently lists its Senvon branch in Pherzawl district. The new facilities have improved access for some residents, but the latest delegation’s demand indicates that gaps remain for people in other parts of the district.
Earlier banking records from the State Level Bankers’ Committee also identified Senvon and Parbung in Pherzawl for brick-and-mortar bank branches, reflecting the area’s long-standing access challenges.
Pherzawl ADC issue also discussed
The Hmar delegation also brought up matters related to the Pherzawl Autonomous District Council. Representatives conveyed their concerns and aspirations regarding the establishment of the council during their meeting with the Chief Minister.
The delegation represented several organisations, including the Indigenous Tribes Advocacy Committee of Pherzawl and Jiribam, Hmar Inpui Hmarram Region and Hmar Inpui Vangai Region. Leaders from these groups also joined the discussions.
The meeting came amid wider efforts to maintain peace and stability in the state. A peace initiative involving Meitei and Hmar representatives was held in Jiribam in April in the presence of the Chief Minister. Officials and local representatives have linked continued peace with the ability to advance development and administrative work.
Government response will shape next steps
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stressed that peace must remain a priority for development and administrative processes. He assured the delegation that the issues raised during the meeting would be looked into and that necessary steps would follow.
For Pherzawl residents, the demands centre on practical needs such as roads, electricity and banking access. The proposed Jiribam-Tipaimukh road upgrade, improved power links and wider financial services could affect connectivity and everyday access to essential services across the district.
The Hmar delegation has now placed these concerns before the state government. Further action will depend on how the authorities examine the demands and coordinate with the relevant departments and agencies.
