Journalists Allegedly Attacked in Agartala in Brutal Late-Night Assault, Media Fraternity Demands Justice

Agartala was shaken by another disturbing incident of violence against journalists late Monday night. Two indigenous reporters were allegedly targeted in a brutal and planned assault. As a result, the incident has sparked widespread outrage across the city and Tripura’s media fraternity.

Such attacks have once again raised serious questions about journalist safety in the state. Moreover, growing concerns over press freedom have intensified following the incident.

Four Assailants Allegedly Carried Out Coordinated Attack

According to preliminary reports, four assailants launched a sudden and coordinated attack on journalists Samir Debbarma and Jimmy Debbarma. The attackers allegedly ambushed the duo without any provocation. Investigators believe the assault was premeditated.

Initially, the attackers targeted Samir Debbarma. They smashed his two mobile phones during the assault. In addition, they snatched a gold chain from his neck and looted cash from his pocket. The assailants also vandalized the motorcycle used by the journalists.

Jimmy Debbarma Attacked Again Inside His Residence

Meanwhile, Jimmy Debbarma faced even more severe violence. Local residents reported that the attackers struck him repeatedly with helmets, iron rods, and heavy sticks. The assault left him seriously injured.

Although he managed to escape at first, the assailants chased him to his home. They broke open the tin gate and stormed inside. Subsequently, the attackers continued beating him, triggering fears of a deliberate attempt to kill.

Police Act Promptly, One Accused Detained

Fearing for their lives, the injured journalists immediately contacted West Agartala Police Station. Soon after, police teams rushed to the scene.

The police detained one of the accused during the operation. However, three others managed to flee. Authorities have since launched a search to trace the remaining suspects.

Journalist Leaders Inspect Scene and Support Victims

On Tuesday morning, senior members of the journalist community reached the area. They accompanied the injured reporters to the police station and inspected the crime scene.

Among those present were Pranab Sarkar, President of the Agartala Press Club and Tripura Journalists’ Union, and Secretary of the Indian Journalists’ Union. Additionally, Ranjit Debbarma, Editor of Chini Khorang News Channel and Secretary of the Khumulwng Press Club, joined the visit.

During the inspection, the leaders spoke with police officials and local residents. They sought detailed information about the sequence of events.

Media Bodies Demand Immediate Arrests

Strongly condemning the incident, Pranab Sarkar described the attack as a direct assault on press freedom. He demanded the arrest of the remaining accused within 24 hours. Furthermore, he urged the administration to take firm steps to prevent such incidents.

He emphasized that journalists play a vital role in democracy. Therefore, ensuring their safety must remain a top priority for the state.

Widespread Anger Among Journalists Across Tripura

Meanwhile, the attack has triggered anger and anxiety among journalists across Tripura. Many fear that violence against media professionals is becoming increasingly frequent. As a result, journalist bodies have demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.

Media organizations have warned that failure to act decisively could encourage further attacks. Ultimately, they stressed that protecting journalists is essential to uphold democracy and the rule of law.

Police investigations are ongoing, and the media fraternity continues to closely monitor developments.
