Journalists as Mirrors of Society and Their Role in Democracy
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted that journalists as mirrors of society carry a major responsibility in shaping public understanding and strengthening democratic processes. While inaugurating the National Press Day celebration in Agartala, he stated that journalism plays a transformative role in guiding public discourse and promoting harmony among people. According to him, the media has always been a strong pillar of democracy, and therefore journalists must remain accountable, unbiased and dedicated to truth.

He noted that the functioning of a democracy depends heavily on the quality of information people receive. Since journalists as mirrors of society influence public perception, they must work with a sense of duty and integrity. Moreover, the Chief Minister said the media should continue building trust by presenting facts with clarity. This trust helps society make informed decisions and creates a healthy space for debate.
During his address, he appreciated the media fraternity of Tripura for responsible reporting and for contributing to a peaceful democratic environment. He explained that respectful dialogue and ethical journalism help communities grow together, especially during times of political or social tension. He added that the media must act not only as a watchdog but also as a bridge between the government and the people.

Chief Minister Saha stressed that political, social and cultural harmony must be protected at all costs, as these elements form the backbone of a healthy society. The Chief Minister appreciated young journalists for entering the field with fresh perspectives. He encouraged them to continue working with discipline. With digital media expanding rapidly, he noted that information travels faster than ever, which increases the need for accuracy. Journalists as mirrors of society must handle this responsibility with care.
He also reminded everyone that constructive criticism is healthy for democracy. However, criticism must be fact-based rather than politically motivated. Journalists must highlight issues affecting people in a way that encourages positive change. He added that media professionals should take pride in their role in nation-building.
Furthermore, he stated that the government remains open to feedback from the press. Meaningful feedback helps improve welfare schemes and address ground-level issues.
