Manipur BSF chief Praveen Kumar met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on October 13 to discuss the state’s law and order situation. The meeting followed fresh firing incidents that reportedly killed at least nine people across three hill districts over the weekend.

The meeting comes amid renewed security concerns in Manipur, where recurring violence has complicated efforts to restore peace. Senior Border Security Force (BSF) officials joined the discussion as authorities faced fresh challenges in the affected districts.

Manipur BSF chief discusses security with CM

Kumar called on the chief minister at the Secretariat in Babupara, Imphal. He was accompanied by Sumit Sharan, Additional Director General of the BSF’s Eastern Command, and Ravi Kant, Inspector General of the force’s Mizoram and Cachar Frontier Headquarters.

Following the meeting, Singh shared details of the discussions on social media. He said they covered the prevailing law and order situation and preparations for the forthcoming BSF Raising Day celebrations.

Moreover, the chief minister praised the force for its dedicated service. He also acknowledged its contribution to maintaining peace, strengthening security and managing the country’s borders.

However, the publicly reported details did not specify any new security measures or operational decisions arising from the meeting. The discussions took place against the backdrop of renewed violence and growing concerns about civilian safety.

Manipur BSF chief visit follows nine deaths

The meeting followed separate firing incidents across Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts on Friday and Saturday. At least nine people reportedly died during the fresh outbreak of violence, which heightened tensions in the state’s hill areas.

Reports linked the initial escalation to an incident in Chassad village in Kamjong district, where a Kuki woman died during a confrontation involving security forces and armed groups. Subsequent incidents included shootings and attacks that killed other people.

The violence also involved the burning of houses, according to media reports. These developments raised fears of further attacks and increased pressure on authorities to prevent the situation from deteriorating.

Meanwhile, the latest incidents have renewed concerns about tensions involving Kuki and Naga communities. Reports indicate that violence between the two communities has claimed more than 50 lives since February 2026.

Authorities face the immediate challenge of protecting residents, preventing retaliatory attacks and restoring normal movement in affected areas. However, the precise circumstances and responsibility for individual incidents require careful verification.

Manipur BSF chief and the wider security challenge

Manipur has faced prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes erupted between the valley-based Meitei community and Kuki-Zo communities in the surrounding hills.

The wider conflict has claimed more than 300 lives and displaced thousands of people. It has also left deep divisions between communities and created continuing challenges for the state administration.

Although authorities have pursued measures to restore normalcy, fresh outbreaks of violence continue to threaten stability. The latest killings highlight the difficulty of preventing local confrontations from escalating into wider unrest.

Furthermore, effective coordination between security agencies and civil authorities remains important in responding to emerging threats. Timely information, protection for vulnerable communities and impartial investigations can help address immediate security concerns.

The BSF’s role in Manipur includes supporting security efforts within its assigned responsibilities. However, the meeting alone does not establish whether the force will change its deployment or introduce additional operations in response to the latest violence.

Fresh clashes put peace efforts under pressure

The October 13 meeting placed renewed attention on Manipur’s security situation as officials confronted another period of tension. The chief minister’s discussions with the BSF director general provided an opportunity to review the prevailing law and order concerns.

At the same time, the reported deaths underline the urgent need to prevent further violence. Residents in affected districts face uncertainty as communities and authorities seek ways to avoid additional casualties.

Finally, restoring lasting peace will require more than responding to individual incidents. Consistent security arrangements, accountability for violence and meaningful engagement between communities will remain important to rebuilding public confidence.

For now, the priority is to protect civilians, establish the facts surrounding the recent killings and prevent further escalation. The impact of the latest violence will depend partly on how effectively authorities address security concerns while supporting efforts to restore stability across Manipur.
