Manipur Police arrested four active members of the banned group Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), or KCP (PWG), during an operation in Kakching district on Monday. The move is part of ongoing efforts to crack down on insurgent activities in the state.

A joint team from the Kakching District Police and Commando Unit carried out the arrest after receiving credible intelligence. Authorities said the group had been planning fresh recruitment and extortion drives across southern Manipur.

Timely Operation Thwarts Insurgent Plans

Acting on a specific tip-off, police teams launched a late-night raid at Khangabok Sorok Wangma, a location falling within Kakching’s operational jurisdiction. According to officials, the information had pointed to the presence of armed KCP (PWG) cadres.

The officers cordoned off the area before proceeding with the search. They quickly detained four suspects and recovered one 9mm pistol, two magazines, and several rounds of live ammunition. The team also seized mobile phones, extortion slips, notebooks, and other materials linked to the outfit’s operations.

Identities of the Arrested Cadres

The arrested individuals were identified as Nanao Singh (35) of Wangjing, Khaba Meitei (32) from Khongjom, Ibomcha Singh (34) of Langmeidong, and Ranjit Moirangthem (30) of Sugnu. All four are believed to be long-time operatives of KCP (PWG).

Police sources revealed that the group had been actively collecting money from local traders and transporters. They were also attempting to reestablish contacts with senior members of the group believed to be based in Myanmar.

Materials Provide Key Intelligence

The seized materials include names of targeted individuals, contact numbers, and financial records. Police believe these documents will aid in uncovering other members of the group and their network.

Superintendent of Police Shrey Vats confirmed that the operation was part of broader counter-insurgency measures across the state. “This arrest has disrupted an emerging threat,” he said. “We’re analyzing the documents and devices to track their wider network.”

Crackdown Continues Amid Rising Threats

The arrest follows a series of similar operations in recent months. Authorities in Manipur have remained on alert due to signs of increased movement by outlawed outfits. Insurgents are reportedly taking advantage of the political unrest and social unrest in the region.

Moreover, intelligence agencies have flagged attempts by banned groups to reactivate dormant sleeper cells. Officials believe these groups aim to exploit existing ethnic tensions to spread propaganda and rebuild their organizational strength.

Enhanced Security Across Key Districts

Following the arrest, police tightened security across Kakching and neighboring districts. Checkpoints have been reinforced, and patrolling has increased along known insurgent routes.

Meanwhile, cyber units are monitoring communication platforms and money transfers linked to suspicious accounts. Police are also coordinating with national intelligence units to share inputs and cross-verify leads obtained during interrogations.

History of KCP (PWG) Activities

KCP (PWG) is one of the many splinter groups that emerged from the original Kangleipak Communist Party. Although small in number, the group has remained active in promoting secessionist ideology and disrupting local governance through armed means.

Over the years, KCP (PWG) has targeted businesses, infrastructure projects, and government offices. Police believe that the group is currently focusing on recruitment and funding, especially by threatening locals for extortion money.

Locals Appreciate Swift Police Action

Residents of Kakching have welcomed the arrests. Many expressed relief that police acted before the group could unleash any violence in the area.

Local leaders praised the district police for their swift and professional response. “People are tired of living under constant fear,” said a social worker from Wangjing. “Such operations restore our faith in law enforcement.”

Government Focused on Long-Term Security

The Manipur government has committed to eradicating all forms of militancy from the region. Officials are pursuing both tactical and strategic steps to dismantle insurgent networks and prevent fresh recruitment.

In addition to policing efforts, authorities are planning to roll out rehabilitation schemes for former insurgents. Youth awareness programs are also being conducted in vulnerable areas to prevent radicalization.

Police Seek Public Support

Manipur Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. A dedicated helpline is available for anonymous tips, and rewards are being offered for credible information.

SP Shrey Vats stressed the importance of community cooperation. “Peace and safety require both force and trust. We urge the public to stand with us in securing Manipur,” he added.

Recent Arrests Indicate Larger Network

Earlier this year, police arrested cadres from KYKL and other KCP factions in Imphal West and Bishnupur. In most cases, the arrested individuals were involved in similar activities like extortion and recruitment.

These incidents confirm that various insurgent groups are still attempting to regain control over some parts of the valley. Security forces remain determined to prevent them from succeeding.

Way Forward

While the arrest of four KCP (PWG) operatives is a positive development, the broader challenge remains. Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for development and dialogue, alongside strict law enforcement, to defeat the insurgency in Manipur.

Authorities are now working to track the group’s funding sources and digital footprints. Investigations into their links with Myanmar-based command centers are ongoing.

The success of this operation demonstrates that proactive policing and timely intelligence can go a long way in securing peace in the region.
