The MBOSE regional office in Shillong is set to move towards a permanent facility after operating from a temporary building for 45 years. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for the new office at the Education Complex in Laitumkhrah on Wednesday.
The development marks a new phase for the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), which has operated its Shillong regional office from a temporary facility for decades. The new building is expected to provide dedicated space for the board’s work in the state capital.
MBOSE regional office gets permanent facility
The foundation stone ceremony took place at the Education Complex in Laitumkhrah, Shillong. Sangma said the move would strengthen the functioning of the board and support Meghalaya’s wider school education system.
The Chief Minister also linked the project to the government’s broader focus on education. He said infrastructure was only one part of that effort, alongside initiatives aimed at improving learning and examination outcomes.
For the MBOSE regional office, the project addresses a long-standing infrastructure gap. After four and a half decades in temporary premises, the Shillong office will have a dedicated institutional space once construction is completed.
Sangma highlights wider education push
Sangma said the government was taking a step-by-step approach to strengthening learning opportunities for students. He referred to programmes including Mission Education, Mission School, CM IMPACT and digital learning.
According to the Chief Minister, these initiatives seek to improve education outcomes through targeted interventions. Therefore, the new office forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the education system rather than serving only as an administrative upgrade.
Moreover, a permanent facility can provide the board with a more stable working environment as its responsibilities continue to grow.
MBOSE plays key role in school education
MBOSE has handled school-level academic and examination responsibilities in Meghalaya for decades. The board began in 1973, and its responsibilities expanded after the North Eastern Hill University discontinued the Pre-University Course in 1996.
The board now handles academic matters such as syllabus development and conducts the Secondary School Leaving Certificate and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations. Its work therefore affects students, schools and education authorities across Meghalaya.
A 2023 government release noted the growth in the number of students appearing for MBOSE examinations. It also recorded a sharp expansion in the number of schools affiliated with the board over the years.
Shillong office supports board operations
The MBOSE regional office serves the board’s operations in Shillong and the surrounding areas. Its permanent facility is expected to give staff a dedicated space for administrative and education-related work.
Meanwhile, the board continues to provide services linked to school examinations and student records. Its official online systems include facilities for examination-related applications and educational verification.
The move to a permanent office also comes as Meghalaya continues to invest in education infrastructure. The state government has recently highlighted education, digital learning and institutional development as areas of focus.
