Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has raised serious concerns over the increasing number of cancer cases in the state, citing recent data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). According to ICMR, Meghalaya has a cancer incidence rate of 176 cases per one lakh population, with East Khasi Hills recording an even higher rate of 227 cases per one lakh population.
Addressing the worrying trend, Lyngdoh reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling not just cancer but also other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, heart conditions, kidney disorders, and liver diseases. She assured the public that the state is making major efforts to enhance cancer treatment facilities and improve healthcare accessibility.
Shillong Civil Hospital Witnesses Surge in Cancer Patients
The Health Minister shared that the Shillong Civil Hospital has been at the forefront of cancer treatment in Meghalaya, handling a major number of cases. In 2024 alone, the hospital treated 8,382 outdoor cancer patients, including 1,649 new cases, while 456 patients required radiotherapy.
To accommodate the growing number of cancer patients, the government has expanded the hospital’s cancer wing from 50 to 90 beds, with plans to further increase the capacity to 200 beds in the near future. This move aims to reduce the burden on healthcare facilities and provide better treatment options for patients within the state.
Addressing Shortage of Specialized Doctors and Technical Challenges
One of the major challenges in providing cancer care in Meghalaya is the shortage of specialized doctors and technical experts. Minister Lyngdoh assured that the government is actively addressing this issue by sending doctors for specialized training.
“We are equipping our healthcare professionals with advanced training so that they can return to the state and fill the gaps in our healthcare system,” she stated. This initiative is expected to improve cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, ensuring that more people can receive quality medical attention locally.
Collaboration with NEIGRIHMS and Other Leading Cancer Institutes
The Meghalaya government is also working closely with the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to enhance cancer treatment facilities. The collaboration includes information sharing, patient referrals, and access to state-of-the-art surgical procedures at NEIGRIHMS.
Minister Lyngdoh emphasized that low-income patients are being sent to NEIGRIHMS, which has high-quality operating theatres and specialized cancer treatment units. This partnership aims to ensure that even the economically weaker sections of society can access advanced cancer care.
Additionally, the government is coordinating with top healthcare institutions such as Guwahati Medical College, Barwa Cancer Institute, and North East Cancer Institute to provide better treatment options for patients. These collaborations will help patients receive medical care closer to home without the need for extensive travel.
Encouraging Cancer Patients to Seek Treatment Locally
In her address, Minister Lyngdoh encouraged Meghalaya residents to trust the medical facilities available in the state and not travel long distances for cancer treatment.
“You can receive treatment in your own state. We are in constant contact with premier institutions that provide excellent cancer care. We want people to consult their physicians and utilize the resources available within Meghalaya,” she said.
By enhancing local healthcare infrastructure, training specialized doctors, and collaborating with renowned medical institutes, the Meghalaya government aims to make cancer treatment more accessible and affordable for its citizens.
