The Mizoram State Boundary Committee reconvened on January 25, 2024, marking its sixth meeting at the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory Conference Hall. Chaired by Mizoram’s Home Minister K. Sapdanga, the session brought together key stakeholders, showcasing a collective commitment to promoting a secure border and ensuring the well-being of residents.
In attendance were prominent figures such as EF&CC Minister Lalthansanga, Chief Secretary Dr Renu Sharma, and DGP Anil Shukla, along with representatives from various political parties and organizations. Members from MNF, ZPM, MPCC, AAP, BJP, MZP, MSU, CYMA, MUP, MKHC, and JAC on ILRFD were present, highlighting the inclusive nature of the discussions.
Minister Sapdanga expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the previous government in addressing critical border-related issues. The session underscored the significance of open channels of communication, emphasizing the need to collaboratively address concerns related to the state’s boundaries effectively.
A crucial outcome of the meeting was the unanimous decision to resume talks with the Assam counterpart. These discussions had faced a temporary delay due to the Mizoram state elections held in November 2023. The stakeholders recognized the importance of continuing dialogue to foster understanding and cooperation in addressing border-related challenges.
The Mizoram State Boundary Committee has a history of convening on several occasions, with the first meeting held on July 30, 2021, followed by sessions on September 7, 2021, and November 17, 2021. Subsequent meetings took place on September 9, 2022, and January 20, 2023. Today’s gathering marked the first under the new Mizoram government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The renewed commitment to dialogue and cooperation showcased at this meeting reflects the state’s dedication to resolving border issues through diplomatic means. As Mizoram and Assam resume talks, the hope is that these discussions will contribute to a lasting and amicable resolution, ensuring the security and well-being of the residents in the region.
