Speculation over a possible Modi Cabinet reshuffle has intensified in recent weeks. One of the biggest questions concerns the Finance Ministry and whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi could replace Nirmala Sitharaman with former Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das.

However, there is no official confirmation that Sitharaman will leave the Finance Ministry. Reports about the possible change remain part of ongoing political speculation. The Finance Ministry’s official website continues to list Sitharaman as the Union Finance Minister.

The reported possibility of bringing Das into the Union Cabinet has nevertheless attracted attention. His long experience in economic policy and administration makes him a natural name in discussions about the Finance Ministry.

Shaktikanta Das Emerges as Possible Contender

Shaktikanta Das is a retired Indian Administrative Service officer who served as RBI Governor from 2018 to 2024. During his tenure, he handled the central bank through major economic challenges and global disruptions.

Before becoming RBI Governor, Das held several important positions in the Union government. He also worked closely with the Finance Ministry and gained extensive experience in economic administration.

Recent reports have suggested that the Modi government could consider him for a major role in the Union Cabinet. Some reports have specifically linked his name to the Finance Ministry. However, these reports have not been followed by an official announcement from the government.

Therefore, it is important to distinguish between reported speculation and a confirmed cabinet decision.

Why Shaktikanta Das Is Being Discussed

Das has considerable experience in managing India’s monetary and economic affairs. He served as RBI Governor for six years and became one of the most prominent economic administrators in the country.

His earlier work also included several years in the Finance Ministry. During his government career, he was involved in the preparation of multiple Union Budgets. That experience could prove valuable if the government decides to give him a larger political and administrative role.

Das also brings experience from the highest levels of economic policymaking. As RBI Governor, he regularly worked with the Finance Ministry and other government institutions.

Because of this background, his name has emerged in reports about a possible change at the Finance Ministry. The idea would also fit a broader pattern in which the Modi government has brought professionals with specialist experience into key ministerial positions.

Nirmala Sitharaman Remains Finance Minister

Despite the speculation, Nirmala Sitharaman remains the Union Finance Minister. Government records continue to identify her as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs.

Sitharaman has held the Finance portfolio since 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi retained her in the same position after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the formation of the third Modi government.

She has also continued to oversee major economic decisions. Most recently, the Finance Ministry has remained focused on the implementation of the Union Budget and wider economic reforms.

In fact, Sitharaman was still publicly speaking on economic policy as Finance Minister this week. She recently said India’s banking sector was in a strong position to undertake further reforms. The government also plans to form a High-Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat.

These developments show that Sitharaman continues to perform her duties as Finance Minister.

Is a Cabinet Reshuffle Actually Coming?

Speculation about a major Union Cabinet reshuffle has been circulating for months. Some reports have suggested that the government could make several changes to ministerial portfolios.

Earlier reports also claimed that a large number of ministries could see changes through new appointments, portfolio shifts or the induction of new ministers. However, the government has not officially announced a reshuffle plan matching all of these reports.

The uncertainty has led to several names being linked to different ministries. Sitharaman has also featured in some reports about possible changes to her portfolio.

However, until the Prime Minister recommends changes and the President approves them, such reports remain speculation.

Could Sitharaman Get Another Portfolio?

Another possibility discussed in media reports is that Sitharaman could receive a different ministry instead of leaving the government. Some reports have suggested that she could move to another important portfolio if the government decides to reorganise responsibilities.

However, there is no official confirmation of such a move either.

Sitharaman has held several important positions during her political career. Before becoming Finance Minister, she served as Defence Minister. She also handled the Commerce and Industry portfolio as a Minister of State and later as Minister of State with independent charge.

Her experience across multiple ministries means that a change in responsibility would not necessarily signal her exit from the government.

Why the Finance Ministry Matters

The Finance Ministry remains one of the most important departments in the Union government. It oversees taxation, public expenditure, economic policy and several areas of financial administration.

Any change at the top could therefore attract considerable attention. A new Finance Minister could potentially bring a different approach to economic policy and financial reforms.

At the same time, continuity also matters. Sitharaman has overseen several major economic decisions during her tenure. A change could require a transition period, particularly when the government is implementing long-term economic policies.

For that reason, any decision to replace her would likely involve careful consideration by the Prime Minister and the BJP leadership.

What We Know So Far

At present, there is no official confirmation that Nirmala Sitharaman will be replaced as Finance Minister. The government’s official records continue to list her as Finance Minister.

Shaktikanta Das has emerged as a possible name in media reports about a cabinet change. His experience as a former RBI Governor and senior IAS officer makes him a credible candidate for an economic portfolio. Yet, reports linking him specifically to the Finance Ministry remain unconfirmed.

Therefore, the key takeaway is that the Modi Cabinet reshuffle remains a matter of speculation. Until the government announces an official decision, Sitharaman remains the Finance Minister and Das remains a reported potential contender rather than a confirmed successor.

If a reshuffle does take place, the Finance Ministry will be among the portfolios watched most closely. For now, however, there is no confirmed decision to replace Nirmala Sitharaman with Shaktikanta Das.
