In a notable achievement for law enforcement, Morigaon Police have recorded a 39% conviction rate till May this year, reinforcing their commitment to justice and crime prevention. The police department also secured heavy sentences for two habitual offenders, underlining their zero-tolerance stance on criminal activity.
The conviction rate, which is considered a critical marker of police effectiveness, has been achieved through systematic investigations, strong legal coordination, and a focus on evidence-based trials.
Major Sentences Handed to Repeat Offenders
Among the recent highlights, two hardened criminals were handed down long prison terms by local courts. Both individuals had multiple charges filed against them, including robbery, assault, and repeat offenses under the Indian Penal Code.
Superintendent of Police, Morigaon, Rahul Barthakur said, “The convictions demonstrate our resolve to not just arrest but also ensure that criminals are brought to justice through proper legal channels. This sends a clear message — crime will not go unpunished in Morigaon.”
The police said they relied on comprehensive case tracking, digital evidence, and timely charge sheet submissions to achieve successful outcomes in court.
Breakdown of Conviction Strategy
The Morigaon Police Department has been using a three-pronged strategy — speedy investigation, prosecution collaboration, and community intelligence. Officers are being trained in modern forensic techniques, and cases are being tracked digitally to prevent procedural delays.
Key changes also include the appointment of case coordinators at the police station level to follow up with public prosecutors. Victim assistance programs have also been strengthened to encourage testimony and ensure witness protection.
Rahul Barthakur added, “Improving the conviction rate is not about numbers; it’s about trust. People must feel safe and know that the system will protect them.”
Public Appreciation and Administrative Praise
The performance has drawn appreciation from both the public and higher officials in Assam Police. Senior officials from the Assam Home Department commended the district police force, noting that such efforts contribute directly to law and order stability in the region.
Morigaon residents have also expressed confidence in the growing effectiveness of their local police. Community forums have reported a decline in petty crimes, and women’s safety initiatives have received renewed focus.
A local trader, Mukesh Agarwal, said, “We’ve seen fewer chain snatchings and street crimes. There’s more police patrolling, and when something does happen, they act quickly.”
State-Level Impact and Comparative Performance
With its 39% conviction rate, Morigaon ranks among the top-performing districts in Assam in terms of criminal conviction. In comparison, many districts in the state are still struggling to cross the 30% threshold.
The Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati has taken note of Morigaon’s performance and may replicate its case tracking model in other districts. This effort aligns with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s push for administrative efficiency and better public service delivery.
Future Plans and Crackdown on Drug Offenders
Looking ahead, Morigaon Police plan to tighten their grip on emerging crimes, especially narcotics-related offenses. Special Task Forces (STFs) are being deployed to identify drug peddlers and dismantle supply chains.
Officers are also collaborating with the judiciary to prioritise fast-track trials in sensitive cases, including those involving women, children, and repeat offenders.
The SP concluded, “We will not stop at arrests. We will pursue justice all the way to conviction. That is our commitment to the people of Morigaon.”
