MY Bharat, a national youth initiative, has made a clarion call to the youth of Tripura to actively participate in civil defence and disaster management efforts. The appeal comes at a crucial time when the state is increasingly vulnerable to floods, storms, and other environmental threats.
During a recent awareness and training program held in Agartala, representatives from MY Bharat Tripura urged young citizens to volunteer for the civil defence force. The goal is to build a strong, trained, and community-rooted response team that can assist in emergency rescue operations, early warning dissemination, relief distribution, and post-disaster rehabilitation.
Civil Defence: A Vital Need for Tripura
Tripura, with its hilly terrain and flood-prone zones, has witnessed a sharp uptick in climate-induced disasters over the past few years. From devastating storms to landslides and seasonal floods, the state remains at constant risk. The recent pre-monsoon cyclonic storms that damaged over 1,800 homes and displaced hundreds underscored the urgent need for a local, prepared, and organized disaster management Tripura task force.

Recognizing this, MY Bharat—short for Mera Yuva Bharat—has partnered with the Directorate of Civil Defence and Disaster Management to expand youth participation in preparedness programs across the state’s eight districts.
Youth as First Responders
The initiative aims to empower youth volunteer force members with training in first aid, emergency evacuation, communication systems, and coordination during crises. Officials emphasized that local youth, being more familiar with their surroundings, can act as effective first responders during emergencies, especially in remote or inaccessible areas.
A senior official from MY Bharat Tripura stated, “We believe that today’s youth have immense potential to be change-makers, not just in technology or development, but also in protecting lives during disasters. Civil defence isn’t just a government job—it’s a community responsibility.”
Workshops and simulation drills are being held in schools, colleges, and community centers across the state. Students and young professionals are being encouraged to sign up as volunteers and receive certified training under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) guidelines.
Aligning with National Disaster Resilience Goals
This move aligns with the Centre’s broader mission of building community-based disaster resilience. The government has been advocating for decentralized and inclusive disaster response models where civilians, particularly youth and women, play a proactive role in risk reduction and recovery.
By involving Tripura’s youth in civil defence initiatives, MY Bharat also aims to bridge the gap between policy and grassroots action. The long-term vision is to create a dependable network of trained individuals who can support government agencies during emergencies and minimize casualties and damage.
Community Response and Support
The campaign has already started gaining momentum. Several student unions, non-profits, and youth clubs in Tripura have welcomed the call and pledged support. “Disaster resilience is no longer optional. We see floods almost every year. It’s time we take ownership as citizens,” said Ranjita Das, a college student from Udaipur who recently joined the volunteer program.
Local authorities have also assured that youth volunteers will receive ID cards, basic gear, and periodic refresher training. They will also be eligible for preference in certain public service recruitment drives—a move aimed at incentivizing civic engagement.
With the growing frequency of climate-related disasters, MY Bharat’s call to action for Tripura’s youth is both timely and crucial. By strengthening the state’s civil defence with committed young volunteers, the initiative sets a new benchmark for citizen-driven disaster management models.
The Tripura civil defence campaign not only empowers youth but also lays the groundwork for a safer, more responsive, and resilient future for the state. As more young people step forward, Tripura could soon become a model for community-based disaster preparedness in the Northeast.
