In another alarming incident from Tripura, a newborn baby was illegally sold in Dharmanagar subdivision of North Tripura district. Prompt action by the government-run Childline authority led to the rescue of the infant and his return to the biological mother.
Officials received an anonymous call on December 31. The caller reported that a newborn baby had been sold the previous day. The incident allegedly took place at Bagbasa Panchayat, Ward No. 1, under Dharmanagar police station. The caller also mentioned that the child was sold for a large sum of money.
Childline Launches Immediate Probe
After receiving the information, the Childline team quickly began an inquiry. Members collected details from local panchayat representatives and nearby residents. Their investigation helped them identify the baby’s mother as Madhabi Chowdhury, a resident of the Bagbasa area.
When questioned, Madhabi initially denied the allegations. She claimed that she was divorced and could not have given birth recently. Officials continued their inquiry and pressed for clarity.

Mother Confesses After Questioning
After prolonged questioning, Madhabi admitted the truth. She confessed that she had given birth to a male child around ten days earlier. She also admitted that she handed over the newborn to Tina Deb, the wife of her male cousin.
Sources said the handover involved monetary exchange. Authorities have not officially disclosed the amount involved in the transaction.
Police Trace Buyers in Lalcherra
Following the confession, Childline officials sought police assistance. A joint team launched a search operation to locate the baby. The team traced the child to the Lalcherra area.
Officials found the newborn with Dilip Nath and his wife Champa Nath. The couple reportedly had no children and had taken the baby from the intermediary. The authorities rescued the child without delay.
Baby Reunited With Biological Mother
After ensuring the infant’s safety, Childline completed the required procedures. Officials then handed the baby back to his biological mother, Madhabi Chowdhury. The team ensured that the child was in stable condition.
A spokesperson from the Childline authority confirmed the rescue. She said officials issued a strict warning to the mother. The warning cautioned her against repeating any illegal act involving the child.
Childline to Monitor Child’s Welfare
“We have clearly informed the mother that such acts are illegal and punishable,” the spokesperson said. “Our team will closely monitor the child and the mother to ensure proper care.”
She also stressed that Childline would continue its efforts to prevent child trafficking and illegal adoption. Authorities urged citizens to report suspicious cases involving children without delay.
The incident once again exposed the vulnerability of newborns and the urgent need for awareness. Officials said stronger community support and timely reporting could help prevent such crimes.
