J Infratech has secured a highway project worth Rs 116 crore in Assam, marking another major step in the state’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades. The contract has been awarded by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. The company confirmed the news on Tuesday and said the project will strengthen transport links in one of Assam’s busiest corridors.

Details of the NHIDCL Highway Project

According to J Infratech, the new assignment involves the reconstruction of selected stretches between 514.36 km and 534.80 km of the Jhanji–Demow section of NH-37, earlier known as NH-37 (old). The total length covered under this contract is 20.44 kilometers.

This section remains crucial for movement between Sivasagar, Jorhat, and nearby regions. The corridor handles thousands of commuters and heavy transport vehicles every day. Because of this constant load, road fatigue develops faster, especially during Assam’s long monsoon season. Upgrading the corridor became essential to support smoother travel and reduce long-term maintenance needs.

J Infratech said the project will include reconstruction of damaged portions, strengthening of the base layers, and improvement of drainage structures. These upgrades aim to reduce waterlogging, prevent erosion, and offer a safer driving experience for all road users.

Why the Jhanji–Demow Stretch Is Important

The Jhanji–Demow stretch of NH-37 plays a central role in linking major businesses, agricultural zones, and residential clusters. It supports the movement of essential supplies, agricultural produce, fuel, and inter-district passenger services.

Local residents often face slow traffic and uneven road surfaces during rainy months. The reconstruction will help minimise these disruptions. Faster travel will also reduce vehicle operating costs, supporting transporters who move goods across upper Assam.

Officials familiar with the route expect that the improved road quality will cut travel time and enhance safety. Better road geometry and improved shoulders will help reduce accidents, especially during peak hours.

J Infratech’s Growing Role in Northeast Infrastructure

With this project, J Infratech strengthens its presence in the Northeast. The company has been handling several infrastructure assignments across the region, focusing on durable engineering practices suited to challenging terrain.

In its statement, J Infratech highlighted that the Northeast remains a priority market. The demand for reliable roads continues to grow as economic activity expands across Assam. Better highways also support tourism, interstate movement, and local livelihoods.

The company plans to deploy specialised teams, advanced machinery, and upgraded construction techniques to complete the project within the scheduled timeline. It aims to maintain consistent quality throughout the 20.44 km stretch, ensuring long-term durability.

NHIDCL’s Continued Push for Highway Modernisation

NHIDCL has played a lead role in modernising highway infrastructure across the Northeast. The agency focuses on regions that experience heavy rainfall, difficult terrain, or high traffic density. Assam falls into all three categories, making reconstruction and strengthening projects necessary.

The new project aligns with NHIDCL’s broader strategy to improve surface quality, increase road lifespan, and enhance connectivity between districts. The agency is also developing additional stretches across Assam under various phases, including the widening of corridors, construction of new bridges, and strengthening of existing road foundations.

By awarding this project to J Infratech, NHIDCL aims to speed up ongoing transport improvements in upper Assam. Road upgrades support trade, reduce logistics costs, and create better opportunities for local communities.

Expected Impact on Commuters and Businesses

Local commuters welcome the reconstruction plan, as the stretch often becomes difficult to navigate during monsoons. The improved road will ensure safer movement for cars, two-wheelers, buses, and trucks. Night-time visibility and road discipline are also expected to improve once the project is completed.

Business owners and transporters depend heavily on NH-37 for supply chains. A smoother highway will reduce delays, lower fuel consumption, and help goods reach markets faster. These benefits will support agriculture, retail, and small businesses across the region.

The 20.44 km reconstruction is expected to contribute significantly to Assam’s long-term growth. Once work begins, teams will coordinate with local agencies to ensure smooth progress and minimal travel disruption.
