In a landmark move for Assam’s education and skill development sector, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone for Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University in Gohpur on November 8, 2025.

The university, the first of its kind in the state, will focus exclusively on technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It marks a major step toward empowering youth with practical skills and industry-ready knowledge.

Speaking at the event, Sitharaman emphasized that the project aligns with the vision of “Skill India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, aiming to make Assam a hub for skill-based learning and innovation.

A Tribute to Swahid Kanaklata Barua’s Legacy

The university has been named after Swahid Kanaklata Barua, the young freedom fighter from Assam. Who became a symbol of courage and sacrifice during India’s independence movement.

Sitharaman noted that naming the institution after Barua reflects Assam’s deep respect for its cultural and historical heroes. She said that Barua’s spirit of bravery and dedication will inspire students to contribute to national development.

The event saw participation from several dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and other senior officials. The gathering celebrated the state’s growing role in India’s higher education map.

A Milestone for Technical and Vocational Education

The new university in Gohpur, located in Biswanath district, will act as a center of excellence for technical and vocational training.

It will offer programs in engineering, applied sciences, renewable energy, agriculture technology, entrepreneurship, and advanced manufacturing. Courses will also focus on skill development areas like AI, robotics, and digital design.

Sitharaman highlighted that the institution will help bridge the gap between academia and industry. It will prepare students not only for employment but also for entrepreneurial ventures in diverse fields.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the foundation stone ceremony as a “transformational moment” for Assam’s education landscape.

He stated that the government aims to make Assam a model state in technical and vocational training by 2030. The establishment of Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University, he said, would open new opportunities for the youth of rural and semi-urban regions.

The project also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses the integration of vocational education with mainstream higher learning.

By bringing technical education closer to local communities, the government hopes to curb migration and promote self-reliance among students.

Infrastructure and Employment Opportunities

The upcoming university campus will feature modern laboratories, research centers, incubation hubs, and digital classrooms. It will also include residential facilities for students and staff, promoting a holistic learning environment.

Officials have confirmed that the project will generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs during its construction and operational phases.

The university will also support the establishment of community colleges and skill development centers across Assam, ensuring inclusive education access for all sections of society.

During her address, Sitharaman reiterated the government’s commitment to boosting technical capacity in the Northeast region.

She said that such initiatives will attract investment, promote innovation, and create a skilled workforce to meet future challenges in technology and manufacturing sectors.

The Finance Minister also mentioned that the government is working to connect educational institutions in the Northeast with global technology platforms, ensuring that students receive world-class exposure.

This move is expected to accelerate regional economic growth and support the broader goal of building an Atmanirbhar Northeast.
