Nisha JamVwal flew into Cambridge for what will surely remain one of the highlights of the English summer social season: bestselling novelist Jeffrey Archer and Dame Mary Archer celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with an elegant garden party and luncheon at their historic country estate, The Old Vicarage — the legendary 17th-century stone manor in Grantchester associated with the poet Rupert Brooke and now immortalised by Jeffrey’s larger than life

Jeffrey honoured Nisha by seating KRS Jamwal and her next to former British Prime Minister Sir John Major and Dame Norma Majors table. Around the table were cricket legend Sir Ian Botham and Lady Kathryn Botham, legendary Hollywood producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall—the creative force behind E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and The Bourne Identity.

The leisurely five-course garden luncheon, accompanied by a live band in a Marquis at the glorious flower gardens, reached its high point with three memorable speeches. Sir John Major’s was thoughtful and statesmanlike, earning a resounding ovation. Jeffrey Archer, however, reminded everyone why he remains one of Britain’s finest raconteurs. His irreverent, witty and deliciously self-deprecating address had guests in peals of laughter before Dame Mary Archer responded with warmth, intelligence and characteristic charm but also understatement and Humor.

The guest list read like a chapter from modern British public life: Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch, the ever-effervescent Joanna Lumley, singer Patti Boulaye, Marion Dickens, the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, together with Robin Butler, Michael Howard and Iain Duncan Smith, among a distinguished gathering of literary, political and cultural personalities.

Adding a little literary theatre to the celebrations, Jeffrey delighted guests by presenting everyone with the opening chapter of his forthcoming novel, Adam & Eve, months before its publication.

For JamVwal, the afternoon carried added personal resonance. Jeffrey Archer has written a famous story inspired by her life, “Cast Off”, in his bestselling collection And Thereby Hangs a Tale, using Nisha JamVwal’s real name in the book. Their long-standing friendship has since taken on yet another chapter, with a feature film based on Nisha JamVwal’s extraordinary life in plans and development.

Trust Jeffrey Archer to turn a Diamond Wedding Anniversary into an afternoon where history, literature, politics and friendship all magnificently shared the same garden.
