Odisha Police Apprehends Accused in Punjab Following Sexual Assault Complaint in Puri

PURI, ODISHA — The Baliapanda Police Station in Puri has officially registered a case and initiated strict legal action regarding a recent sexual assault complaint. On April 23, 2026, at 10:00 hrs, an FIR (No. 0102) was filed under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, originating from a Zero FIR (No. 04/26). The complaint was lodged by a 33-year-old woman, Yashoda, a resident of the North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.


According to the official police report, the victim the reported assault took place on February 20, 2026, while the two were visiting Puri. The FIR alleges that the accused forcefully engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim against her resistance at Hotel Dreamland on New Marine Drive Road, and subsequently cut off contact with her.


Following the registration of the case by Inspector Sunil Yadav, the investigation was immediately assigned to Sub-Inspector Smruti Pragyan Behera. Acting swiftly on the complaint, a special team from the Odisha Police, led by SI Behera, traveled to Punjab. With the active cooperation of the local Adampur police, law enforcement successfully conducted a raid and arrested Amritpal Singh. The police team confirmed that the accused will be produced before a Jalandhar court to secure transit remand, after which he will be transported back to Odisha for further legal proceedings and trial.
