Security forces in Mizoram confiscated over 10,000 methamphetamine tablets during an operation in Champhai district, close to the Indo-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police jointly carried out the raid early on Sunday. The operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals suspected of drug trafficking.
According to officials, the tablets are commonly referred to as “Yaba” and are estimated to be worth ₹3 crore in the illegal market. The team intercepted a suspicious vehicle at Zokhawthar, a village known for frequent smuggling attempts.

Operation Led by Assam Rifles and Local Police
The joint team acted swiftly on specific intelligence regarding a cross-border smuggling attempt. Security personnel flagged down the vehicle and conducted a thorough search. They discovered 10,200 meth tablets hidden beneath the rear seat. The suspects, both residents of Mizoram, failed to provide a valid explanation for possessing the tablets.
Instead of releasing them, officers brought the duo to Champhai Police Station for further questioning. Law enforcement agencies are now analyzing their phone records and travel history. Authorities believe the men were working under instructions from a larger network based in Myanmar.
Champhai Emerges as Drug Smuggling Hotspot
Champhai’s location along the porous Indo-Myanmar border has made it vulnerable to transnational crimes, especially narcotics trafficking. With easy access to routes from the Golden Triangle region, smugglers often choose this district to enter Indian territory.
Over the past year, several seizures have taken place in the area, including heroin and crystal meth. Authorities have stepped up patrols, yet drug cartels continue to adapt and exploit new tactics. Consequently, more surveillance teams have been deployed to intercept such illegal movement.
Meth Tablets: A Rising Danger in the Northeast
Yaba, a blend of methamphetamine and caffeine, poses a growing threat in Northeast India. Known for its euphoric effects, it is fast becoming popular among urban youth. These tablets are cheap, compact, and highly addictive. Their spread into states like Mizoram raises serious concerns among health experts and law enforcement.
To tackle this crisis, the Mizoram government has initiated drug awareness programs in schools and colleges. These programs highlight the mental and physical damage caused by long-term meth use.
Home Minister Applauds the Seizure
Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana appreciated the efforts of the security forces. In his statement, he emphasized the need for cooperation between government agencies and the public. He urged locals to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.
Furthermore, the state plans to increase funding for anti-drug campaigns and border security measures. Authorities believe these steps will improve both detection and prevention in vulnerable zones.
Central Agencies Strengthen Monitoring
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has stepped in to assist Mizoram Police with advanced monitoring tools. Digital tracking, satellite data, and AI-based threat assessments have been introduced to counter drug syndicates. Border forces are also receiving more training on profiling suspects and identifying drug concealment tactics.
Earlier this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had warned about the growing nexus of cross-border drug smuggling in Northeast India. In response, the Centre approved special grants for security forces in Mizoram and Manipur.
Suspects Under Interrogation
Champhai Police are interrogating the two arrested individuals to determine their exact role in the drug racket. Investigators are trying to identify their handlers and pinpoint the destination of the meth tablets. Sources suggest the consignment was likely meant for distribution in larger cities such as Guwahati and Kolkata.
Officers have already launched follow-up raids in nearby areas. If any links to international cartels are found, the case will be transferred to the NCB or the Enforcement Directorate for deeper investigation.
Assam Rifles Maintain Vigil at the Border
Assam Rifles have consistently intercepted illegal consignments at the Indo-Myanmar border. Their role remains critical in safeguarding Mizoram from the threats of narcotics, weapons, and human trafficking. Despite challenging terrain and harsh weather, their personnel remain committed to protecting the region.
In 2024 alone, the force reported over a dozen successful drug busts. Local leaders and NGOs have applauded their commitment to curbing the smuggling crisis in Champhai.
Mizoram’s Strategy to Fight the Drug Menace
To achieve a long-term solution, Mizoram is drafting a comprehensive anti-drug action plan. The proposal includes border surveillance through drones, drug rehabilitation centers, and community policing programs. Authorities are also collaborating with churches and tribal leaders to promote drug-free living among youth.
Additionally, stricter laws and faster prosecution will be implemented under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Repeat offenders may face enhanced sentences, including long-term imprisonment.
