Dhubri district of Assam witnessed fresh tensions after protests demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Koch-Rajbongshi community and a separate Kamtapur state turned violent. The All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) has been leading these demands, which have become a long-standing socio-political issue in the region.

On Friday, a 12-hour shutdown was observed across Dhubri, called by AKRSU and its supporters. The protest followed a clash between demonstrators and police forces, during which several people were reportedly injured. Witnesses alleged that police used excessive force to disperse the crowd, a charge that has intensified anger among community members.

In response, the Assam government announced disciplinary action against the police personnel involved. The officer-in-charge of the concerned police station was suspended, and a formal inquiry has been ordered to determine accountability. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the incident, directing officials to ensure fairness and transparency in the investigation.

The Koch-Rajbongshi community has for decades been demanding inclusion under the Scheduled Tribe category, arguing that recognition would provide much-needed constitutional safeguards. Alongside this, a section of the community continues to advocate for a separate Kamtapur state carved out of parts of Assam and neighboring states. However, the Chief Minister has earlier expressed skepticism about the viability of such a demand, while reiterating that the government is open to dialogue.

Dhubri district has been a focal point of multiple conflicts and agitations in recent years. Apart from the current protests, eviction drives undertaken to reclaim government land for projects such as a proposed thermal power plant have also sparked resistance. These issues have added to the prevailing unrest and demands for security assurances.

The Assam government, in view of recurring tensions in Dhubri, has been considering enhanced security measures, including the possibility of setting up a permanent Indian Army base in the district. Officials argue that such a step would help stabilize the region and prevent future flare-ups.

The developments in Dhubri highlight the complex socio-political landscape of Assam, where diverse communities continue to seek recognition, protection of rights, and fulfillment of long-pending demands. The Koch-Rajbongshi agitation once again underscores the urgency of addressing identity-based concerns to ensure peace and stability in the state.
