As an engineering graduate, how did you find your way into the world of acting and politics? Could you share the journey of how you became involved in both fields?
Acting has always been a personal interest of mine. In 2014, I approached Fr. P. Joseph, a renowned Kokborok film director known for his notable works like “Mathia” (2004) and “Yarwng” (2008), and requested a role. Fast forward to 2017, I was busy working as a digital marketer during the day. One fine day, my friend, Mr. Suhel Debbarma, who is now an elected MDC, approached me for a Music Video project. He was the lyricist of the song and encouraged me to join the project despite my lack of prior acting experience. This marked my debut project titled “Omono De Hinn Hamjakma,” in which I co-starred alongside Mrs. Sourabhee Debbarma Thapa, the winner of Indian Idol 4.
On the other hand, politics was never something I had on my to-do list. In fact, I believed that politics was not my cup of tea. However, I had a strong interest in working for the betterment of the people. In 2021, just before the last ADC election, I felt a strong urge to contribute and support Tipra Motha Party, as our leaders had been actively involved in serving the people.
Following the election, our party achieved a significant victory, and I was appointed as the state secretary of the Youth Tipra Federation. Since then, I have been diligently working to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to me by the party.
You are known for your active involvement in social activities such as organizing blood donation camps and helping the underprivileged. How do you manage to balance your commitments as an actor, politician, and social activist?
Acting has become my passion, while social service remains my top priority. I believe that politics, whether we like it or not, is a necessity. When it comes to acting, I value quality over quantity, which is why I have chosen to work on only a few projects thus far. This allows me to allocate more time for other activities. Currently, a significant portion of my time is dedicated to political activities. Additionally, engaging in social services requires a substantial amount of time and funding. Fortunately, I have been fortunate to receive tremendous support from kind-hearted individuals, which has enabled me to carry out these social activities. However, there is still much work to be done, and I have a grander plan in mind. Managing all these different activities simultaneously can be quite hectic, but I firmly believe that where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Can you tell us about your role as an actor? What kind of projects do you typically gravitate towards, and are there any specific messages or themes you aim to convey through your performances?
I believe actors should not limit themselves to a specific role. Playing a variety of challenging characters brings me pleasure in my work. Initially, I mostly landed romantic roles or played the protagonist. However, in the music video ” Tulung Tulung ” I was given the opportunity to portray a negative role. Subsequently, I played the antagonist in a Hindi short movie and a Bengali feature film. I am eagerly looking forward to taking on more challenging characters. Moreover, I prefer characters that reflect a profound message that viewers can relate to.
Being an active leader of the Tipra Motha Party, what motivated you to enter politics? How do you see your role in bringing about positive change in Tripura through your political endeavors?
I often observe people incessantly complaining about politicians, labeling them as corrupt, uneducated, selfish, and more. However, only a handful of individuals take action instead of simply remaining passive and complaining. The prevailing mindset of society and the flaws within the system present numerous loopholes, and if the younger generation fails to contribute to bringing about change, then who will? Personally, I don’t derive much enjoyment from compromising my peace of mind by engaging in politics. Nevertheless, the realization that “politics is a necessity” strikes a chord within me.
What are some of the major challenges you have encountered while juggling your acting career and political responsibilities? How do you navigate these challenges and ensure your efforts are effective in both realms?
I often encounter the typical mindset that questions, “How can he be an actor and a politician?” or “Oh, so now actors are getting involved in politics too?” Additionally, comments suggesting that there is more money in politics than in acting are quite common, coming from both politicians and the general public. Over the years, I have learned to respond less to negative comments in order to maintain a calm and focused mindset. It’s impossible to please everyone no matter what you do. Actions, however, speak louder than words. Throughout my journey in acting and politics, I have had the privilege of meeting inspiring personalities who have offered their encouragement and support. These individuals, along with the appreciation and support from many good-hearted people, have been the driving forces that keep me motivated.
Tripura is known for its rich cultural heritage. How do you incorporate the cultural essence of the region into your work as an actor and politician? Are there any specific initiatives or projects you have undertaken to promote the local culture?
Preservation and protection of cultural heritage are significant aspects of our political endeavors. We prioritize activities such as preserving our history, enriching our language, promoting ethnicity, and creating awareness of our heritage among millennials and the upcoming generation. Simultaneously, I am actively involved in preparing documentary films and feature films that aim to showcase our rich culture and heritage to a broader audience through digital media and cinema screens.
How do you see your social activities and political involvement intersecting? How do you leverage your position to address social issues and for the betterment of the community?
Both social and political activities are carried out with the aim of serving the public interest. The key distinction between these two fields lies in the fact that social activities can be undertaken individually or with a small group of people, whereas political activities necessitate broader participation in order to gain the support of the majority. One advantage of being a well-known figure in the state is the ability to reach a wider audience and engage with diverse perspectives. I leverage this advantage to effectively communicate and champion social and political causes, whether through social media platforms or during political gatherings and rallies. It is important to note that meaningful action, not just words, is essential for mobilizing the masses in modern times, requiring the use of contemporary strategies.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement from your journey as an actor and politician? What impact did it have on you personally and professionally?
Learning through experiences is a significant achievement for me. In the realm of acting, it doesn’t matter how you truly feel in a particular moment; you have to express how your character is supposed to feel in the given scene. Even if you are devastated inside, if the scene requires a shining smile, you must put one on your face. Mastering this skill puts you one step ahead as an actor, and it also has real-life applications.
Now, shifting to the realm of politics, I have had Glossophobia, a fear of public speaking, since my childhood. As a result, I struggle with delivering speeches. However, I am actively working on improving this aspect. From my experience in political speeches, I have learned that when you speak from the heart, the public relates and listens. There have been moments when I was about to conclude my speech, and someone from the audience requested me to continue speaking. In those moments, I truly felt the impact of my efforts.
What are your future plans or aspirations as an actor, politician, and social activist? Are there any specific goals you hope to achieve or projects you would like to pursue?
As an actor, my dream is to leave a legacy before I pass away. I aspire to share stories through movies that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience in real life. In the realm of politics, my sole objective is to foster a more favorable environment for the next generation. Furthermore, my commitment to social activities will persist, irrespective of my involvement in acting or politics.
What advice would you give to young individuals who aspire to make a difference in society through various fields like acting, politics, or social work?
“If you have a passion for acting, pursue it not for fame, but to find meaning in it. Being a good leader requires being a good listener. A leader doesn’t simply instruct you on what to do but demonstrates how it’s done. Lastly, when engaging in social services, don’t expect anything in return. Do it because the world needs it.”
