Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, addressed students at the ‘Think India North-East Summit 2025’ held at IIT Guwahati, emphasizing the critical role of youth in India’s progress and the Northeast’s increasing contribution to the nation’s economic growth.
The summit, which brought together students, academicians, and policymakers, served as a platform to discuss the development of the Northeast region and its strategic role in India’s rise as a global economic power.
Sonowal’s Vision for Northeast’s Growth
In his speech, Sonowal reflected on the transformation that the Northeast has undergone in the past decade. He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has prioritized the empowerment of young minds, creating ample opportunities for youth in the region. “The youth of our nation are its driving force. With a vision of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, we are witnessing the Northeast securing its rightful place in India’s growth story. The youth of Assam and the Northeast are now advancing based on merit, contributing significantly to India’s dream of becoming a global leader,” he said.
Sonowal further stressed that India is on track to become one of the top three global economies by 2030, and the innovation and dedication of the youth will play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.
PM Modi’s Vision and Act East Policy
During his address, Sonowal highlighted the ‘Act East Policy’, a strategic initiative launched by the Modi government to strengthen economic, cultural, and infrastructural ties between Northeast India and neighboring countries. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the Act East Policy has transformed the Northeast into a gateway to Southeast Asia. With enhanced infrastructure, better connectivity, and increased investment in trade and technology, the region is set to become a major hub of economic activity,” he explained.
Sonowal further added that the Government of India’s investment in roads, railways, waterways, and air connectivity has significantly improved trade opportunities, positioning the Northeast as a key player in India’s economic roadmap.
Youth, Innovation, and AI in Nation-Building
The Union Minister also spoke about the importance of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping India’s future. “To compete globally, India must embrace technological advancements, innovation, and AI-driven solutions. While we move forward, it is essential for our youth to stay rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage while leveraging modern technology for development,” Sonowal stated.
Quoting Assamese cultural icon Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Sonowal encouraged students to pursue excellence in education, creativity, and entrepreneurship, positioning themselves as global leaders.
Interactive Session with Students
The minister engaged in an interactive session with students, discussing maritime infrastructure development and the Northeast’s role in India’s blue economy.
He shared insights from the 2024-25 Economic Survey, which highlighted India’s record growth in port capacity and infrastructure, making it a rising maritime powerhouse. “Every Indian now believes in the country’s potential to emerge as a global leader. This belief is what we call Think India—a vision where young minds drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and national progress,” he remarked.
Students actively participated in discussions, raising queries about employment opportunities, start-up ecosystems, and regional infrastructure projects in the Northeast.
Sonowal assured them that the Modi government is committed to providing the best opportunities, particularly through skill development programs, industrial corridors, and digital transformation initiatives.
