Normal life came to a halt in parts of Sepahijala district on Tuesday after Tipra Motha supporters blocked roads in Bishramganj. Protesters stopped traffic along the crucial Gomati–South Tripura route for several hours.
The blockade left students, examination candidates, office-goers, and daily commuters stranded. Many vehicles remained stuck on both sides of the highway, causing long delays and public distress.

Reason Behind the Protest
The agitation followed the government’s notification dated December 31, 2025, which constituted the Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat. Authorities formed the urban body by merging Bishramganj, Chesrimai, and Barjala Gram Panchayats.
Tipra Motha supporters claimed that the notification included land under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). They alleged that the move violated constitutional provisions protecting tribal land.
Protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of the notification. They warned of stronger agitation if the government ignored their concerns.
District Administration Rejects Allegations
Sepahijala District Magistrate Sidharth Shiv Jaiswal, IAS, dismissed the allegations. He clarified that officials relied only on revenue records and approved administrative boundaries.
“There is no inclusion of TTAADC land,” officials said. “The government followed due process while finalising the boundaries.”
The administration urged the public not to believe misleading claims circulating during the protest.
TTAADC CEM Raises Objections
Despite official clarification, TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia raised objections. He wrote to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressing concern over the notification.
In his letter, Jamatia alleged that ADC land had been included without the council’s consent. He referred to earlier instances where authorities sought ADC approval for major infrastructure projects.
Government Denies Need for Consultation
Government sources rejected the CEM’s claims. Officials accused him of spreading confusion and provoking unrest.
They stated that consultation with the ADC was unnecessary. According to the government, the notified Nagar Panchayat area does not fall under ADC jurisdiction.
Joint Team Formed for Boundary Verification
To address the dispute, the administration formed a joint demarcation team. The SDM of Bishalgarh will lead the exercise.
The team includes officials from Bishalgarh and Bishramganj, Nagar Panchayat representatives, TTAADC officials, and local social workers. Members will conduct field-level verification to clear all doubts.
Students and Residents Suffer
The blockade caused severe hardship, especially for students appearing in examinations. Many candidates walked long distances to reach their centres.
Local residents expressed anger over repeated disruptions. They said frequent protests affect education, emergency travel, and essential services.
Administration Appeals for Calm
As tension continued into the evening, the district administration appealed for restraint. Officials called for cooperation during the verification process.
They stressed that misinformation and agitation should not disrupt governance, development, or public life.
