Tripura Starts Major Underground Power Project
The Power Department of Tripura has begun work on one of the state’s largest power infrastructure projects under the Agartala Smart City initiative. Additionally, the department has started laying more than 3,000 kilometres of underground electrical cables across the Agartala Municipal Corporation area.
The project will replace the existing overhead electricity network with an underground system. As a result, residents can expect a more reliable and safer power supply.
Project to Improve Electricity Reliability
Officials said the underground cabling system will reduce power disruptions caused by strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall. Furthermore, the new network will improve public safety by minimising risks associated with exposed overhead wires.

More Than 3,000 Km of Cables Planned
According to the Power Department, the project includes the installation of approximately 45 kilometres of 33 KV power lines, 426 kilometres of 11 KV lines, and nearly 2,533 kilometres of High Tension (HT) and Low Tension (LT) cables.
Consequently, Agartala will receive a modern underground electricity distribution network designed to support future urban growth.
Multiple Agencies Awarded Contracts
Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has awarded contracts to several agencies for executing the project.
IRCON International, in a joint venture with Badri Rai & Company, secured contracts worth ₹763 crore. Meanwhile, KMBPL–AEPLJB received work worth ₹445 crore, and Bridge & Roof Company (India) Ltd was awarded contracts worth ₹228 crore.
Project Funded Through PFC Loan
Officials said the state government is financing the project through a loan from the Power Finance Corporation because no separate state fund has been allocated for the initiative.
Moreover, the Power Department considers the underground cabling project a flagship initiative under the leadership of Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
Expansion Planned for Other Towns
After completing the Agartala project, the government plans to extend underground electricity cabling to other major towns, including Udaipur, Dharmanagar, and Khumulwng.
