In a boost to the state’s aquaculture sector, Tripura has increased its fish production by 5,000 metric tonnes (MT) over the past year. Minister for Fisheries Prem Kumar Reang announced this achievement while unveiling plans for a ₹38 crore state-of-the-art fish market in Agartala, aimed at transforming the fish trade ecosystem and supporting thousands of local farmers.
The announcement was made during a press conference on Saturday, where Reang highlighted the state’s consistent efforts to become self-reliant in fish production and reduce dependency on imports from other states.
Sustainable Growth in Aquaculture
Tripura currently produces over 82,000 MT of fish annually, meeting almost 90% of its domestic demand. The additional 5,000 MT reflects both increased local fish farming activities and better water resource management. According to the Minister, this growth came from strategic investments in scientific fish breeding, training programs for farmers, and expansion of fish feed distribution centers.
“We have empowered rural farmers with better tools and knowledge. This output is the result of their dedication and our targeted schemes,” Reang stated.
Agartala to Get a Modern ₹38 Crore Fish Market
To further support the sector, the government has sanctioned ₹38 crore for the construction of a modern wholesale and retail fish market in Agartala. The proposed market will include cold storage, processing units, quality control labs, and designated hygiene zones.
The facility will provide infrastructure for fish auctions, boost direct sales for farmers, and reduce middlemen exploitation. It will also serve as a central hub for fish distribution across Tripura and even to neighboring states.
Enhancing Income and Livelihoods For Fish Output
Minister Reang confirmed that over 12,000 fish farmers across the state will benefit from this expansion. He emphasized the role of women-led self-help groups and cooperatives in this growth, many of whom have taken up fish rearing as a sustainable source of income.
With access to modern hatcheries, training, and government subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), small-scale farmers have shifted to semi-intensive and biofloc-based aquaculture systems, resulting in higher yields.
Export Potential and Regional Connectivity For Fish Output
The state government also plans to explore fish exports to Bangladesh and Southeast Asian countries through integrated fish corridors and improved road connectivity. The upcoming fish market in Agartala will meet international standards, paving the way for quality exports.
Officials also hinted at setting up satellite fish markets in Udaipur, Dharmanagar, and Kailashahar to ease regional access and streamline fish distribution.
Call for Private Sector Participation Fish Output
The state has invited private investors and start-ups to collaborate in building value chains in fish processing, packaging, and transportation. Reang stated, “Our goal is not only self-sufficiency but also to make Tripura a net exporter of fish products. We welcome technology providers and investors to join hands.”
Education and Training for the Next Generation
The Fisheries Department has begun new training programs to educate young entrepreneurs about sustainable fish farming practices. Plans are underway to collaborate with colleges and technical institutes to promote aquaculture-based vocational training.
The government also aims to integrate fishery education with rural development programs to boost employment and reverse urban migration.
