The Tripura government has taken a significant step to expand the state’s higher education landscape. During a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha, the ministers approved the upgradation of the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) and Tripura Women’s College into full-fledged state universities. Tourism Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury shared the details after the meeting.
Tripura Expands Its University Network
With these decisions, Tripura will soon operate three state-run universities. Currently, Maharaja Bir Bikram University is the only university under direct state control, while Tripura University functions under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Therefore, the addition of two new state universities marks a major push toward broader access to higher education. Moreover, the government aims to strengthen academic capacity across the northeastern region.

Government Converts TIT into a Technical University
Chowdhury stated that the government has decided to convert TIT into a technical university. Once the authorities complete the required procedures, the new varsity will supervise all polytechnic colleges in the state. As a result, officials expect better coordination, upgraded academic standards, and stronger technical education. Furthermore, the transition will help streamline course structures and create more opportunities for students pursuing technical fields.
Women’s College to Become a Women’s University
In addition, the cabinet approved the elevation of Tripura Women’s College in Agartala to a Women’s University. According to Chowdhury, the move reflects the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment. The new university will allow more women to pursue higher studies and research without leaving the state. Consequently, the upgradation is expected to improve women’s enrollment in advanced academic programs.
Government Sanctions Recruitment for 407 New Posts
Meanwhile, the cabinet also cleared the creation and filling of 407 posts across various government departments. The Cooperation Department will recruit 97 individuals for roles such as auditors, investigators, and statistical investigators. The Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) will conduct the written examinations for these positions.
Additionally, the Tripura Civil Service Commission will oversee the recruitment process for 28 ICDS supervisors. Officials believe these new appointments will strengthen departmental efficiency and ensure faster service delivery. Moreover, the fresh recruitments aim to address workforce shortages in critical sectors.
Urban Development Department to Get New Technical Posts
Furthermore, the cabinet sanctioned 14 new technical posts under the Urban Development Department. These include positions for Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Public Health Engineers. The government expects these technical roles to support ongoing and future urban infrastructure projects. In turn, the new workforce will help improve project execution and planning across urban regions.
Tripura to Set Up 119 New Anganwadi Centres
Additionally, the government approved the establishment of 119 new anganwadi centres to enhance early childhood care and pre-school education. These centres will expand services in underserved areas and provide better access to nutrition support, maternal care, and early learning. Consequently, the initiative will strengthen grassroots child welfare and improve long-term developmental outcomes.
Tripura Pushes for Stronger Education and Governance
Overall, the cabinet’s decisions highlight the government’s focus on education, welfare, and administrative growth. With new universities, additional job opportunities, and improved child care infrastructure, Tripura aims to accelerate development across key sectors. Moreover, these initiatives demonstrate the state’s long-term commitment to inclusive progress.
