Tripura Higher Education Department has announced the cancellation of the scheduled summer vacation for all state-run general degree colleges, professional colleges, and technical institutes. The summer break, initially planned from May 9 to June 3, 2025, spanning 26 days, has been withdrawn to facilitate uninterrupted academic activities.

According to an official notification issued by Animesh Debbarma, Director of the Higher Education Department, the decision was made “in the interest of the students.” The directive mandates that colleges remain operational during this period to conduct semester examinations, manage the admission process, and continue regular classes.

To compensate faculty members for the canceled vacation, the department has assured that they will be granted 26 days of earned leave. This measure aims to acknowledge the additional commitment required from the teaching staff during this extended academic period. The abrupt cancellation has elicited mixed reactions from educators and students alike. Many were surprised by the decision, especially considering the prevailing high temperatures in the state. Tripura recorded below-average rainfall of 130.3 mm last month, against the normal of 194.8 mm. The highest maximum temperature of 36.6°C was recorded at Agartala airport on April 14, with an average mean maximum temperature of 34.5°C. The lowest minimum temperature was 21.3°C on April 7, with an average mean minimum temperature of 24.5°C.

This is not the first instance of such a decision in Tripura. Last year, the state government similarly canceled the summer vacation for 26 days to ensure the timely completion of the semester syllabus. Officials cited disruptions caused by the Lok Sabha elections and heatwaves, which had already resulted in a loss of two weeks of classes. The cancellation was deemed necessary to cover the syllabus adequately.

The current decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining the academic schedule and minimizing disruptions to students’ education. By keeping educational institutions open during the summer period, the authorities aim to ensure that academic activities proceed without further delays.

Students and faculty members are advised to stay informed about any further updates from the Higher Education Department and to plan accordingly for the adjusted academic calendar.
