Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha launched an affordable mid-day meal service at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital. This initiative aims to provide nutritious meals to patients’ families at a nominal price of just Rs 10. The service addresses the financial and logistical struggles that attendants face while caring for their loved ones in the hospital.

Dr. Saha emphasized that many families, especially those from rural areas, struggle to afford regular meals while staying near hospitals. The initiative ensures that no one goes hungry due to financial constraints. The meal service includes rice, dal, vegetables, and other essential nutrients, maintaining a balanced diet. Officials confirmed that hygiene and quality remain top priorities in food preparation.

While inaugurating the service, Dr. Saha interacted with attendants and assured them of the government’s commitment to healthcare accessibility. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with the state’s broader efforts to enhance patient care. The CM also noted that government hospitals should not only focus on medical treatment but also on holistic support for patients and their families.

Hospital authorities revealed that the initiative was made possible through a collaborative effort between the state government and local organizations. Several NGOs and private donors contributed to ensuring the affordability and sustainability of the meal program. The kitchen facilities are designed to maintain cleanliness and efficiency, with trained staff preparing the meals under strict supervision.

Many families expressed their gratitude, stating that the service had significantly reduced their daily expenses. For several attendants, buying food from outside vendors had been a costly challenge. With the introduction of affordable meals, they can now focus on their loved ones’ recovery without the added stress of food expenses.

Medical professionals also welcomed the initiative, recognizing that a well-fed attendant is better equipped to support patients. Doctors noted that many caregivers skip meals due to financial constraints, leading to exhaustion and poor health. Providing them with nutritious food ensures they remain physically and mentally strong while assisting patients.

Dr. Saha reaffirmed the government’s dedication to expanding similar welfare programs. He mentioned plans to extend this initiative to other government hospitals across Tripura. The success of the meal service at GB Pant Hospital could serve as a model for hospitals in other districts.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that the initiative reflects the broader vision of ensuring healthcare remains a fundamental right rather than a privilege. He reiterated that the government will continue to introduce policies that reduce financial burdens on families seeking medical treatment.

Health department officials confirmed that feedback from patients’ families will be regularly collected to improve meal quality and service efficiency. Authorities will conduct routine inspections to maintain hygiene standards and prevent food wastage. If necessary, adjustments will be made to accommodate dietary needs.

Social workers and healthcare activists praised the initiative, calling it a significant step toward a more inclusive healthcare system. They urged the government to explore further measures such as subsidized accommodation for long-term patient attendants. They also emphasized the importance of expanding food services to cover breakfast and dinner.

During his address, Dr. Saha encouraged other states to adopt similar models to support underprivileged families in hospitals. He stressed that affordable healthcare must go beyond medical treatments and include basic necessities like food and shelter. The CM also recognized the contributions of hospital staff, NGOs, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this program a reality.

The event concluded with Dr. Saha personally serving meals to attendants, symbolizing the government’s hands-on approach to addressing public concerns. He assured that similar people-centric initiatives will continue in the future, reinforcing the commitment to a healthier and more compassionate society.
