Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has proposed the introduction of a dedicated tourism train and a mobile application to strengthen travel infrastructure across the Northeast. He shared the idea during the final meeting of the high-level task force on tourism promotion set up by the Ministry of DoNER. Because the Northeast continues to attract visitors through unique cultural festivals and natural landscapes, the Tripura tourism train proposal aims to make travel smoother, safer, and more convenient. Therefore, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to support upgraded connectivity systems.
According to the Information and Cultural Affairs department, Saha said regional festivals such as the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland and the Unity Promo Fest in Tripura have already boosted tourism significantly. He added that these events showcase the cultural strength of the Northeast and encourage travellers from across India. With better transport and digital support, the region can host far more visitors in the coming years.

Tourism Train Proposed to Strengthen Northeast Connectivity
The Tripura tourism train proposal focuses on a dedicated rail service that connects major tourism zones across the Northeast. Saha said such a train could offer visitors an organised way to explore the region. Moreover, it can link cultural circuits, heritage sites, eco-tourism zones, and festival venues.
He suggested that the tourism train should operate with clear schedules, guided services, and tourist-friendly facilities. Since many travellers face challenges in planning multi-state trips, a unified transport mode could reduce confusion and improve accessibility. Additionally, Saha believes the project will support homestay owners, transport workers, and local markets across the region.
The proposal also highlights the importance of expanding rail connectivity in Tripura. With ongoing railway upgrades and new routes connecting southern districts, the tourism train could extend the state’s reach. As a result, more tourists will be able to explore Tripura’s waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, and cultural sites.
Mobile App Suggested Alongside Tripura Tourism Train Proposal
Along with the tourism train, Chief Minister Saha recommended a dedicated mobile app for visitors. The app would offer travel guides, hotel listings, festival schedules, transport routes, and digital maps. Because travellers depend heavily on online resources, the Tripura tourism train proposal pairs digital support with physical connectivity.
The app would also share information on safety guidelines, helpline numbers, and weather updates. These features help travellers make informed decisions and avoid disruptions. Furthermore, the app could integrate booking options for trains, buses, and local activities. This all-in-one platform would make Northeast tourism easier for domestic and international visitors.
Officials from the ICA department said the digital initiative would help smaller states promote hidden destinations. Many villages in the Northeast have unique traditions and tourist potential but lack visibility. With mobile technology, these places could gain more exposure.
Festivals Highlight Growth Potential Behind Tripura Tourism Train Proposal
Saha highlighted how regional festivals have changed the tourism landscape. The Hornbill Festival continues to draw tens of thousands of visitors to Nagaland each year. Similarly, the Unity Promo Fest in Tripura has boosted the state’s cultural presence. These events reflect the collective identity of the Northeast, and they play a major role in shaping tourism growth.
Because festivals act as powerful attractions, the Tripura tourism train proposal aims to support visitor movement during these peak seasons. Better connectivity will allow travellers to attend multiple festivals across different states smoothly. This movement strengthens the regional economy through hotel stays, local purchases, and cultural engagement.
Tripura Tourism Train Proposal Aims to Transform Regional Travel
Chief Minister Saha said the Northeast has the potential to become one of India’s strongest tourism zones. However, the region needs consistent infrastructure upgrades to meet rising demand. The tourism train and mobile app offer practical solutions to bridge travel gaps and support long-term growth.
With cooperation from the Centre and neighbouring states, the Tripura tourism train proposal can create a unified tourism network. As the region continues to promote its festivals, landscapes, and heritage, better infrastructure will ensure that visitors have an enriching and accessible experience.
