The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on November 4 announced candidates for 49 of the 51 wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) ahead of the Urban Local Body elections scheduled for November 27. The party also clarified that it had held no formal discussions with the CPI(M) regarding a possible joint electoral contest under the INDIA alliance.
The announcement comes amid differences between the two opposition parties over seat-sharing and election strategy. Although CPI(M) leaders had earlier indicated their willingness to contest the elections alongside Congress, the Congress leadership alleged that the Left party finalised its candidates and filed nominations without consulting them.
The Congress announcement has raised questions about the possibility of opposition unity in Tripura’s upcoming municipal elections.

Congress Alleges Lack of Consultation by CPI(M)
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman expressed disappointment over the CPI(M)’s decision to announce candidates and submit nomination papers without consulting the Congress leadership.
He pointed out that both parties had participated in a joint INDIA alliance rally in Agartala on October 30. Following the rally, Congress leaders expected discussions about a possible electoral understanding for the upcoming municipal elections.
However, Roy Barman alleged that the CPI(M) proceeded with its candidate selection and nomination process independently.
“Congress is a national-level political party. If anyone thinks that Congress is a small or insignificant political outfit that can be taken for granted, that is not acceptable. There was no discussion or meeting with us,” Roy Barman said.
He further stated that the CPI(M) had announced its candidates while indicating that Congress could contest the remaining seats.
According to Roy Barman, Congress leaders travelled to Delhi after the October 30 rally and returned on November 1. On the same day, the CPI(M) reportedly filed its nominations without holding any formal alliance discussions with Congress.
Although Roy Barman acknowledged that CPI(M) State Committee Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury had expressed interest in an alliance, he said certain forces and the reluctance of some individuals prevented the proposal from moving forward.
He maintained that a joint electoral contest would have been a better arrangement for the opposition parties.
Congress Finalises Candidates for 49 AMC Wards
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Asish Kumar Saha confirmed that the party had finalised candidates for 49 of the 51 AMC wards.
He said the party would announce candidates for the remaining two wards shortly. Meanwhile, Congress leaders across different urban local bodies were working to finalise nominations and complete the election preparations.
Saha also announced that the party would begin filing nomination papers for its declared candidates from Thursday.
Congress Raises Concerns Over Election Environment
Apart from the alliance dispute, the Congress leadership raised serious concerns about the election environment in different municipal and nagar panchayat areas.
Asish Kumar Saha alleged that opposition candidates were facing intimidation and obstruction while attempting to submit their nomination papers.
He specifically mentioned alleged incidents in Mohanpur, Jirania, Ranirbazar, Kamalpur and Santirbazar. According to him, supporters of the ruling party were preventing opposition candidates from completing the nomination process.
In response, the Congress approached the state administration and the State Election Commission, demanding adequate security arrangements.
The party sought protection for candidates, proposers and other representatives at nomination centres to ensure that everyone could participate in the electoral process without fear.
Congress Recalls Alleged Irregularities in 2021 Elections
Saha also referred to the 2021 Urban Local Body elections, alleging that widespread violence and electoral irregularities had undermined the democratic process.
He said the Congress had raised these concerns during the all-party meeting convened by the State Election Commission. The party also discussed the issue with the State Election Commissioner.
The Congress has urged the state administration and the State Election Commission to honour their assurances and ensure free, fair and peaceful elections across Tripura.
