The Hon’ble High Court of Tripura has taken cognizance of alleged irregularities in recent recruitments at Tripura University (TU). Justice Shri Sabyasachi Purkayastha, after hearing preliminary arguments, has issued notices to Tripura University, the selected candidates, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) in connection with two writ petitions filed before the court. The cases are listed as WPC No. 568/2025 and WPC No. 556/2025.

The first petition challenges the appointment of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism Administration. According to the petitioner, the university’s recruitment advertisement specifically required applicants to hold a Master’s degree in Tourism. It has been alleged that the selected candidate did not meet this essential qualification, making the appointment contrary to the advertised criteria. The petition argues that such a selection violates both academic standards and the principles of fair recruitment.

The second petition pertains to the recruitment of a Section Officer at the university. The litigant claims that the appointed candidate did not fulfill the minimum educational qualifications mandated under the Tripura University Cadre Recruitment Rules, 2023. The plea emphasizes that bypassing basic eligibility norms undermines the transparency and credibility of the recruitment process at a central university.

Both cases have brought the university’s recruitment procedures under scrutiny, raising questions about adherence to established rules and the fairness of recent appointments. The High Court has directed the concerned parties to respond to the notices, and the next hearings in both matters are scheduled for November 2025.

Advocate Samarjit Bhattacharjee is representing the petitioners in these cases. The petitions highlight broader concerns regarding accountability in the hiring practices of Tripura University.

Beyond the two disputed recruitments currently before the court, reports suggest that another appointment in the Department of Tourism Administration has also come under suspicion. Allegations indicate that recruitment irregularities may not be limited to isolated cases but could be part of a larger pattern.

The developments have sparked debate within academic and student circles, with many expressing concern over the impact such irregularities could have on the reputation of the university. Being a central institution, Tripura University is expected to maintain rigorous standards in recruitment, ensuring fairness, merit-based selection, and compliance with UGC guidelines.

The High Court’s intervention signals a strong judicial check on recruitment practices at public institutions. Observers believe the outcome of these cases may set an important precedent for future appointments in Tripura University as well as other central universities across the country.
